* * * * * OCTOBER CONTEST WINNERS * * * * *
Before I post the winners I just want to say thank you to all who participated. All the photos were really beautiful and most all of them captured the feel of Wabi-Sabi. I was just looking through all the entries and each entry was a beautiful photo. Good work to all. I hope this contest stretched you a lot and helped you to see things in a way that you may not have seen before.

So here they are:

First Place (and incidentally the first submission), the sublimely beautiful TONE POEM by JeffR

Second place give us two photos, This Old Wall from MattSh and San Juan de Ulua from 'a la izquierda'.

This Old Wall

San Juan de Ulua

The winner of third place is the gorgeous photo from Wyohiker, Frosting

Fourth Place
Made in the Shade from WannaJumpMyScooterifth Place
http://billrhodesphoto.com/images/,made%20in%20shade.jpg

Fifth Place
Black Tears of the Arizona from CC

Sixth Place
The Simplicity of Round by Celebration
Jugs on my Porch by Mira

At this point a brief pause to encourage everyone to go back to the submission thread and appreciate and learn from all of the photos that were submitted. Really wonderful work: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=280x61373#61383

This is the point where I can give special mentions. Really difficult because I like so many of the pictures so much. On my first pass I chose 8 photos that got me but didn't get into the winners circle. I'm going to mention them in no special order.

Our Last Dance - This one got me on the title as well as the beautiful photo

L.F.CO - The Red, The Red!

Cracked - Wabi Sabi Rock

Corroded Memories of Revolution - Yes. Industrial Revolution and the revolving of the gears. I love word plays like that. Plus the lighting, colors, focus, and composition were impeccable.

Past Perfect - Beauty in death of a flower. Fantastic close up.

Red Leaf and Leaf in Red - Two photos with nearly the same title and so different. Both so perfect photographically.

And then there's the rest, all deserving of accolades. Again, to honor the photographers please visit the submission page and feel their work.

JeffR, congratulations again. The ball is passed to you.

3. Corroded
The Winner was an easy pick, so I let others vote for it.

I like the light play, the rust, the composition, and the faithfulness to the theme in "Corroded..."

I'm way too new here to be offering congratulations to everyone. So instead, I'll say I've enjoyed seeing all the pictures and being able to offer one of my own.

5. Hearty congratulations to all the winners, especially to JeffR for that glorious
tone poem which not only speaks but also sings.
Sometimes something comes along you simply have to vote for, because of its overwhelming appeal, it was like that for me.

Beautiful photographs all, I'm proud to have a place in your midst.

9. I'll just say congratulations to everyone.
The creativity and skill on display here was remarkable. And the creativity extends to the challenging theme we were provided; for me it was a motivation to get out and shoot a lot and really concentrate on subjects I'd otherwise have overlooked. Discovery is one of the abiding pleasures of photography, and this contest set us all on a voyage of discovery. I loved too many of the entries to have a favorite.

Take a bow, Richard D! Well done.

19. JeffR proves that even poison ivy can be beautiful. Congrats!
Edited on Thu Oct-22-09 12:19 PM by alfredo
Note to budding photographers:

JeffR did not put the ivy directly in the center. If he had, it would have divided the image in two. Now you have three areas.

Three is good.

They ivy divides the other two elements. He made the dark the "larger" element to prevent the light from dominating the image. The light, without the ivy would have been the largest element, but it is covered in part by the ivy. The ivy pulls your eye up, away from the light.

do I pick the winner and even more rare that I pick it before anyone else has entered a contest but that photo had winner all over it from the beginning. Never do I say which I like or love before the contest and it was hard not to rave about this one this time around. It need to be a framed print somewhere.

Loved seeing everyone's entry, beautiful set of photos that made voting next to impossible. Keep it up everyone. :yourock:

Great contest theme Richard D and hosting. You deserve a hardy round of applause for both. I love themes that make both the photog and viewer think.
