June Photo Contest *** Scouting Suggestions for a Theme***
Try to remember a previously suggested theme you would have liked to see win and resurrect it.
Or think about June as a month, and tailor a theme to that. (I like June, it has my birthday in it)

In looking back over other contests, we are a bit early getting this started, so I'm going to give the theme suggestions 3 full days, and then post the poll mid week.

We'll start the prelims after my son's wedding on June 11, possibly the 13th or 14th, and run them for 3 days.

Then the finals will run for 2 days.
I have found that by a third day the photos have scrolled around too much that people are tired of seeing them, and kicking them.

==========================

My thought on a theme may not be a real possibility. I would like to propose the submission of a photo you took that you just simply love.
Something you can't ever hope to find a way to show off to the larger public. Subject can be anything.
That name could be " A personal Favorite"

or, I would like to also suggest :"Sunlight"
does not include sunrise or sunset

lastly, we could try to do a "Portrait of a Stranger"
someone who we don't know, or barely know.

============================

I look forward to see what you suggest !

1. I'd be surpised if anyone came up with a better theme idea
than the ones you've suggested here. If I remember right, "personal best" was a theme idea I suggested for a contest some time ago, and it died a pretty quick death in the voting. But I still love the idea of every contestant putting out something that he or she feels really happy with. As long as 29 of us can reconcile ourselves to the idea that we don't win in the end, of course.

2. Even though I like your ideas, I will throw in this

Pictures to support ColbertWatcher's poverty project if he/she is going through with the idea. Then anyone who wanted could allow ColbertWatcher to gather the pictures together in one spot.

3. Your suggestion is very timely, except for how sad it is. Look here:
I took these in the Plaza in Santa Fe.
I had never been there before and just had an hour and a half.
Bustling with activity, isn't it? And that right at noon on a gorgeous day.

7. I'd love to see a macro theme
I'm not sure if enough people here shoot macro, but if so it would make a great theme. Travel no farther than your dining room or back yard to get a great subject.

10. We did a macro theme last summer
It was the first contest I entered and I got my butt kicked royally. I'm more than happy to try again :evilgrin:

8. How about
Going out of business as a theme.

I see so many places in my little high end tourist town going out of business or owners retiring. I think this theme could draw photos from the totally down and out to a place like my town.

9. I like it, but
If it were broadened just a bit, it could be the ColbertWatcher project (suggested above) which would include the following type things--

* closed businesses
* empty houses
* foreclosed neighborhoods
* run-down schools
* skid rows
* homeless shelters
* unemployment lines
* food bank lines

11. I like all of your suggestions
The hardest one for me would be choosing a personal favourite. My favourites change by the day/hour/minute. So, if you don't mind me changing my submission 50x ...

12. How about a "my world" theme?
I was just watching a spot on the news about children from Nunavut who have never seen a tree, a high-rise, or a big city. It made me think about how we all live in slightly different places with different things we take for granted. It would be interesting to see a picture from each person's life/world. It doesn't have to be too personal, just what it's like to live in a small town, a big city, on a farm, anywhere. A way to show others the variety of this world (or even the similarities).

16. I think this is a wonderful idea. I'll put it in the poll and if by chance it wins
I will specify that 2 sentences or thereabouts go under the photo to give it depth.
(can I do that?)

This hosting might turn out to be fun after all.

17. Me too. Because it suggests two things to be present: One is you don't know the person
so, in order to do something as intimate as a portrait, you all but HAVE to ask permission to do the shot. And that, my friends and fellow photographers, is something we all need more practice in.

BTW
in some places, on my now infamous vacation out west, I used the phrase: "I'm about to enter a contest of Historic Places in America. And this is such a beautiful setting, do you mind if you are in the photo it would give it such depth....(or whatever adjective you want to use)"

Invariably then the next sentence out of my mouth would be:
"No, should I win it's not for money, I would share if it were. It's just for the prestige of having taken a good photograph".

did we have an "open" contest a couple of years ago.

Nevertheless I like the topic. :)
