I love these contests and find it very hard to choose between the photographs offered as they are all wonderful. I am in awe of the talent shown by all the photographers!

Thanks for sharing your passion with the rest of us, it is much appreciated!

Edited to add: Wanted to recommend this but found one cannot recommend from the Group Forums, will recommend the thread in GD instead.

for a wonderfully poetic shot. And pipoman's beautiful color. There is a timelessness about both of them.
Just want to say that this was my first entry with the new camera.
Also, thanks to Mz Pip for a well run contest with some daunting moments.

9. A question for Bluedigger - our Winner.
Your photo has an ethereal beauty on many levels. I think it struck a cord additionally because it triggers memories we don't even know we have, different for us all.

For me, my Dad took me into fields like this to gather leftover wheat, which we then had ground into our flour for the winter. I had no shoes, and it made my feet raw.
But, such was our lot in post war Germany, and we did not complain.

My questions: Where was it, how did you come to take this shot, who are the people, and what exactly are they doing.
Just a little background about it.
And special congratulations on winning with such a beautiful photograph.

12. Wow! Thanks to all!
I don't know what to say after such a dominating win! 16%? LOL! It was a great field of entries! Everyone did DU proud!

About the photo - The picture was taken with a Nikon Coolpix 8700, which sadly succumbed to exposure in a driving rainstorm last year. I really liked that camera... It was taken in the fall of '05 (I think) after the corn harvest (obviously) on the floodplain of the Susquehanna River west of Binghamton, NY. Probably in the Windsor/Deposit vicinity. I was leading a field crew of archaeologists, and we were doing some survey work for a proposed pipeline. Early in the morning, probably before 9am, but that time of year the fog can linger. I love fog! Anyways, you are looking at several two person teams of archaeologists spaced out probably 10 meters apart, with one digging a shovel test, and the other screening the soil for artifacts through the wooden contraption. I saw some kvetching about there not being enough women in the photos - roughly half of the workers in the shot were females. Oh yeah, to the best of my recollection, we found nothing!

And special thanks to Mz Pip for running such a great contest! :applause:

16. Sometimes you have no choice!
The picture does what it does and the voters do what they do and then you win!

Hosting isn't so bad (unless DU goes down in the middle of posting the Prelims, and really how often can that happen...?)

and Jerry, my jeweler, thanks you, too. He was a little embarrassed about his knuckles but I explained the contest so thoroughly that he said he was sorry he didn't have a dog to include in the picture. ;-)

This was a great contest and very hard to vote in.

Mz Pip, you did a very good job under extreme pressure. Hosting is stressful enough without DU hiccuping during the poll posting. Next time has to be easier for you.
CC- who firmly believes second place is first winner in these contest.:)
