More pics from my outings this summer
X-post from Lounge

Here are yet more birds from my outings this summer plus something a bit different from me, a non-bird.

More green jays

More great kiskadees

The bulge in the throat is a cicada it had just eaten

A cactus wren

A crested caracara (a really cool falcon that acts more like a vulture) Its colloquial name is Spanish is el quebrantahuesos or bone-breaker!

Of course if you get too close, it takes off.

And now for something different...an anole

And yes more to come...

1. You got the Geico dude on vacation! Well done!
:toast: I've heard he's a tough one to track down. Love the 4th pic. He looks like he's about to wink at you.

The caracara is beautiful. Nice shots, all!

Close but no cigar. Thanks for the nice comments. I love that caracara too.

5. I know, and yours is cuter than the Geico dude.
I used to have a really neat habitat set up with a couple of these critters. Half of it was built up with land and live plants for the anoles, and the other half was water for a couple of fish, and I think I had an aquatic frog in there too. I had a crab for a while, but he spent a lot of time sitting up on top of the filter tube, and I think the cat got him, or he crawled off a bit too far on an adventure. He just disappeared one day.

How big is the caracara? The beak looks pretty impressive.

12. It's an average sized falcon.
It probably weighs a pound or two and its wingspan is about 3 feet.

9. It's a type of cricket. At least I call it a cricket here in Texas.
The green jay's range only comes to the far southern tip of Texas and that is it. You won't see it anywhere else in the US. It's rare for the US, but common south of the border all the way to South America where there is another variant of this bird called the Inca Jay.

10. Thanks.
It usually involves mosquito and ant bites, a bit of cursing, a little luck and a lot of waiting. There is a bit more but you get the idea. ;)

11. It wasn't tagged, but
I do think it was shedding some old skin. That is about the only thing I can think of. Good observation.

16. Never heard of a caracara before now
and what a beautiful bird. That sequence of photos is jawdropping, and the third one down where he's standing calmly in profile on the fencepost or utility pole is sure-as-dammit visual poetry.

That little reptile is pretty cool, too. Those shots are nicely lit and framed. He should have paid you to take those.
