3. Nope
the problem is that in scanning you need to choose the area ya want to scan. You just wanna scan the area of the photo and not all that empty white space. Generally after you've done the preliminary scan - you can hold down the right mouse button an outline just the picture and then do the final scan and all you will get is the picture.

6. I see the problem was solved but you might want to get Irfanview, a free
program that does zillions of things with all sorts of formats, but was initially and is still focussed on dealing with images. It has all the basic tools you are likely to need for a while. In this case, you could have just cropped the main image out of the whole scan and saved it and copied it to the web without rescanning. Go to http://www.irfanview.com/

It has been the top-rated image-handling freeware for Windows for a decade, and will do far more than you can imagine. It is a good learning tool, and if/when you get to a point when you find it can't do the more advanced manipulations you want, well, then you can look at the $90 to $500 and up alternatives to this excellent free program.
