I thought Michigan's U.P. was beautiful BEFORE this vacation. Now I think it's beauty must match that of any place in the country. If anybody enjoys hiking, and can make the big trek up the northwestern U.P., then I'd recommend a walk along all of these rivers. Some of the falls are fairly easily accessible, but others require a pretty tough hike. I think they were worth every step (and every sore muscle!). One of the forest rangers said that the high water levels in the U.P. rivers occur in mid-April. I missed it by about 3 weeks. (You'll need snowshoes to get around) In May, all along the rivers, you could see the signs of the high water from between 6 and 12 above the levels you see in these photos. The banks of the rivers were littered with hundreds of trees that had been carried by the high water, but then deposited somewhere when the water levels receded. What an amazing vacation!
