1. Such deadly beauty
Edited on Wed Jan-30-08 09:15 PM by kgfnally
I grew up in SW Michigan, and on New Year 1984/85, there was a record ice storm that hit around midnight. In the morning, everything exposed to the elements was coated in a 1/4" thick layer of ice. It was absolutely gorgeous, but incredibly deadly.

IIRC, 250,000 people were without power for two weeks. I don't know how many deaths were associated with that storm; there had to have been several. One very vivid 'close-call' memory I have is of my father and I walking down the road, looking at the ice, and my father suddenly stopping me. I didn't understand why... until a two-foot-thick oak branch came crashing down into the road, not twenty feet in front of us.

To say I was shaken is an understatement.

2. Wow, that's quite a story.
Your dad had a good sixth sense.

We're lucky here that we seldom get ice storms of that kind of magnitude, at least not here in Anchorage. What we do get is this icy ground fog that coats everything in hoar frost. It's especially beautiful when the sun shines through the fog like it was today -- the crystals sparkle like pixie dust.

3. That is cold!
Did you use your F2.8L 70-200mm for this shot? That thing must suck in light because it doesn't look like you had much. :)

4. Yes, I did.
Actually the light wasn't too bad. The sun was shining where I was standing, but the fog was thick in the trees.

5. Beautiful picture!
There's many a morning when I drive to work in ice fog. It certainly makes for an awesome commute!

6. Makes me cold just lookin' at it.
We've had more than our share of fog lately, but nothing like that. Gorgeous light and nicely done.

I enjoy shooting in fog (in a fog is my normal state of being).
