Snowed in
We finally got some snow the past couple of days. :woohoo: This is looking out my front door showing the snow on top of the fence at about 10:30 p.m. It's still snowing. :)

I think I've got just the right setup now to take aurora pictures this winter if we get lucky. I'm pleased with this amount of light and detail at night.

1. We got an inch on Sunday!

We never get snow. It was amazing to wake up to. Here's a pic near town, where it was a little deeper. That's a really great night picture you've got, amazing!

3. Very nice!
Fresh snow, especially in the morning seems so peaceful.

6. That's lovely.
You really caught the falling snow. I don't think there's anything prettier than new snow. :)

2. Simply beautiful!
We've been having rain lately, so all of our wonderful snow is either gone, or tuned to chunks of ice.

5. That's what happened to our November snow
We had about eight inches on the ground in November and by just before Christmas it was almost all gone. It was so weird to see the grass here that late in the season. This is so much more normal.

Beautiful - and wow! that's some kind of clarity you've got there.
Fingers crossed for some aurora shots.

7. Beautiful.
It causes a bit of cognitive dissonance for me since we've had the a/c on for the last 3 days.

9. It's so beautiful
and still coming down. We're in for some serious cold over the next few days, down around zero, so it won't be going anywhere this time. We just heard on tonight's forecast that some weather stations up in the northwest are predicting -70 degree wind chills tonight - with that, 0 doesn't sound too bad. :)

10. Our snow is gone -- boohoo
But there is snow on the mountains, skiing is good. I'm hoping we get dumped on in February! :hi:

11. I want some so bad...
What usually ends up being the problem is that when we drive north from here to get away from the mountains and the city lights on clear nights, then there's often ground fog that obscures the sky. I'm thinking probably my best shot will be when we go up to Fairbanks in late February/early March for the ice sculptures. It's much drier up there, so if we luck out and go during a clear spell, I might have some success. Most of the really great aurora shots are taken in the Interior.

And they really are a crap shoot. Last winter there was a Japanese photographer who spent an entire month camped out on the Kahiltna Glacier on Mt. McKinley, and he never once saw the Northern Lights. The day he flew out, they came out in full force. You just never know.

12. I wonder what they look like from Norway
Perhaps I can convince hubby to go ice diving and I can photograph the lights? Sounds like a plan to me :hi:

13. There are probably forecasts you can look up.
Edited on Sun Jan-13-08 04:28 PM by Blue_In_AK
We've got a link here, so you can check to see if there's supposed to be active, moderate or quiet lights and how far south they come.

Here you go: This is Alaska's link, but if you look up in the left-hand corner it shows forecasts for Europe, too. They say it's active here tonight, and the weather is very clear and crisp, so I might go outside tonight and see if anything is going on if the weather holds. There are times we can see them here in Anchorage -- they're just not as bright and distinct as when you get out away from town.

14. I love this shot.
It is beautiful and you can almost feel the quite cold. Hoping you get a chance at those northern lights.

Are you gearing up for the Iditarod? Making cards with you website address this year? I hope you are cause I bet the sled teams love finding them and you had great shots last year.
