4. How will this work, Tahiti?
Do you want to open a new post on Sunday evening here in the Photography Group where we can post our photos, then sometime later next week you will copy them to a new post in the Lounge in some kind of order?

We should have a deadline for posting so everyone knows what to shoot for. What would be a good day and time for you, Tahiti?

This will take a lot of work. My hat is off to you for organizing this!

12. I trust the process....
Right now we have over a foot of snow and it's accumulating at about 2-4 inches per hour. I literally can't see the house across the street right now because it's a blizzard white out. If it breaks before sunset I'll got for it.... but I'm not going to be able to walk, drive, dog-sled, or snowmobile to a decent "vantage point".

This is the closest cam near my house and it just went down over an hour ago....

it'll be full dark here at sunset. Like F.Gordon, I've had over a foot of snow already. It was already "dusk" at 1pm in my front yard (pictured below). The only thing that keeps this rail free of snow is the 40-55mph wind gusts.

But of course I'll still take a photo at "sunset" - 7:33pm. :hi:

19. It'll be 60 degrees again by Tuesday or Wednesday.
And in the meantime, we need the moisture to help out with the drought. Also, this is the first big snow this year. When I lived in New England, some years we had this kind of snow every other day.

So it's all good!

24. I know how it is in Colorado...I grew up there
and moved back for a year after college, too. I remember in 1957, the year my little brother was born, it snowed just a couple of days before his birth -- May 25th. I think that was the latest. I also remember one year it snowed two or three feet on the 1st of September. But I also remember how sometimes we went on picnics in December. You take what you get there, that's for sure. I think we may be done with our snow here for this year. There's still a little on the ground, but it's about 45 degrees and sunny today - absolutely gorgeous, and I'm looking forward to a great sunset, unless it's TOO clear.

Edited on Sun Apr-10-05 05:49 PM by intheflow
I'm down by DU, so still in town, but fairly east. I'll bet the foothills are getting hammered. I drove from Ft. Collins around midday. It took 2+ hours! 25 was pretty clear of snow but it was flooding around the construction in the north of town.

I've only been out here 4 years, so have only seen this kind of snow in Denver once before: Spring Break 2003, the same weekend we invaded Iraq. :(

And yes! Housing is insane. And the wierdest part is that people are buying these cute bungaloo houses for $250K then ripping them down and building $250K McMansions that take up the whole lot. I bet there's a lot of denial about debt accumulation in this neighborhood. I'm in a tiny student rental.

14. (sigh) Well ....
... if we were going to just post sunsets of any night, then all this is a waste of time. While there's certainly nothing to keep folks from pretending their photo is on the same evening as the others, there's a certain poeticism I thought we were seeking ... a show diversity across the country.

Heck, I still don't know how I'm going to do it myself ... since it's damned near impossible to find a spot where the horizon is even visible in my neck of the woods. (I sure do miss my California.)

15. I can step outside and do it again. That's no problem. I have an
idea which might make a better picture, so don't worry, it will be tonight that I will take the picture.

Sometimes the effect of the light on objects is more interesting than the sunset itself. You don't have to look into the sun to enjoy a sunset.

28. Totally missed it
I was just getting ready to leave and saw a friend walking up the street and he asked me for a ride across the bridge to another friends house. By the time I got to a decent vantage point sunset was gone and the twilight was rather boring. Had the "too clear" problem here too.

Now if I had bought that telephoto lens last week that I had planned on I could have gotten a cool shot of the moon.

36. One of the many things in the back of my mind ...
... is that we all have widely differing "seasons" at this time of year. That's why I was particularly interested in doing it this month, and as early as it seemed feasible. That's part of the content diversity - and even if we ALL take photos of the "same thing" (i.e. sunset) at the same "time" (i.e. sunset), we're going to see this wondrous diversity. Weather. Topology. Vegetation. Development (rural/suburban/urban).

Again ... no matter how "standardized" we make it, we ARE variety.

... and stumbled on this one. I was feeling pretty stupid and embarassed that I didn't know what the hell I was going to do or where the hell I was going to take a sunset photo. So, I hopped in my car with the vague idea that I'd try an overpass on I-696 near here (since we are Motown, after all). While I did get one there, I saw this and stopped for it. I think it turned out OK.

Oh ... it's the commuter enclosure (gazebo?) next to the train tracks here in Royal Oak, near downtown. (Royal Oak is a northern suburb of Detroit, across the county line in Oakland County.) A few (comparatively very few) people actually commute by train (heavy rail, not light rail) to jobs in the city.

I remember it well. I used to deliver deliver pizza there from Adam's Rib in Southfield.

Of course I used to cruse Woodward, looking for sex and/or drugs. During the early Seventies, it was easy to find both along that stretch of highway.

One night I drove all the way from Pontiac to down town Detroit without hitting one red light. It could be done, but only late at night because Highland Park lights were flashing yellow. You still had to watch your pace because when you got back into Detroit, the lights were back on the same schedule.

61. I figure we can wait a day or two for any filmies who're still developing.
I was thinking of composing a web page that links to the various photos. I don't know if I'll get around to it before I join Procrastinator's Anonymous at their 1978 Annual Meeting, though.

64. My sunset was a bust
but I took some shots anyway. I can do better with a sunrise from my house. The sun sets behind a bunch of trees so it's not easy to get the actual sun in the shot (without getting in the car and I had had a couple of glasses of wine so I didn't want to drive). Normally we have really dramatic sunsets here in AZ, but it wasn't so last night. Here it is anyway. You can just make out the last bit of sunlight highlighting the tip of the mountain. I don't have access to the GPS figures. This was taken in Prescott, AZ.

67. You really need some clouds for dramatic sunsets.
It was just too dang nice where you were yesterday! :)

BTW, you can get your logitude/latitude by going to Weather Underground and searching for your local forcast by zip code. It gives l/l with your forcast.

68. This is true

Saturday would probably have been better. We had snow & rain that day. I didn't think to check the sunset though. Most days here are sunny, clear and beautiful. And because we are up so high (6,000 ft), the sky is brilliant blue most of the time. I sometimes get tired of "dang nice" days. Believe it or not, it gets old. I actually miss dreary days.

Thanks for the link. I was hoping someone would clue me in ;-) . Here is my location: Lat/Lon 34.6° N 112.4° W.

73. That's pretty!
What a great sky!

I also find that the downsized posted photos don't seem to have the umph! the originals have.

74. Blue sunset 24-hours later.
Just for ha-has, and because I'm just amazed at how quickly snow melts in Colorado, here's a comparison of last night's sunset and tonight's. There were 16 inches of snow when I shoveled that path this morning!
