The Right to Bear SLRs

By 02:00 AM Dec, 18, 2006

Thomas Hawk doesn't look like a troublemaker. With his hair neatly combed and a polo shirt tucked into his black corduroys, the 38-year-old father of four more closely resembles an investment adviser, which is his day job in San Francisco. But as his after-work alter ego -- a budding photographer who roams city streets with a Canon EOS 5D in hand -- trouble seems to find him. Usually it comes in the form of police officers or private security guards, who accuse him of trespassing while he's taking shots of buildings and public spaces. "Where I'm different from most photographers," says Hawk, who catalogs his most dramatic confrontations on his blog at http://www.thomashawk.com , "is that I'm not going to back down."

This afternoon is no exception, as Hawk (his photo-blogging pseudonym) wanders into the grimy Transbay bus terminal and begins shooting its interior artwork and graffiti. Within 90 seconds, a security guard approaches.

"Can I see a permit, please?" he says.

"I don't have a permit," Hawk replies amiably, eye pressed to the viewfinder.

1. Thanks, alfredo
I've just bookmarked this guy's site, and Zooomr as well. Not sure about this guy's talents as a photographer, but I like his attitude.

2. I didn't spend much time with his site. I was busy looking for
a local labyrinth.

3. That's a great article
And makes a very good point -- you have every right to photograph buildings and people in the public. Inside a building you have to play by their rules, but outside you can snap away.

I was at the Whole Foods headquarters here in Austin last weekend and was going to take a photo of these cute Christmas cupcakes. I thought they would make a good 'Tis the Season shot. Just about to click the shutter and the woman said, "I'm sorry, you can't take photos here without permission from management upstairs." Which I thought was very silly, but I was inside so I didn't argue. I gave her a look anyway.

But outside, most definitely, stand up for your rights.

4. If it was a sensitive military installation I can see them
being touchy, of course they shouldn't have it out in plain view.

I do my shopping with a digital camera. If my wife doesn't feel good enough to come out with me. I take my camera and photograph samples of what we need. I tell the people what I am doing before I photograph anything.

Nobody has said no. hint hint ;)

5. I'm getting an Internet Explorer error message when I try the link.
It starts loading and I can see the first two photos. Then a box pops up and the page switches to a 404.
I'm not sure if it's my #!*&! Explorer :argh: , or if he's been censored.
