***ANNOUNCEMENT*** New SEASONAL CONTESTS (Please read)
I've been thinking and talking about doing this for some time. I figured it's about time I got off my gluteus maximus and actually did it. So, here goes.

There are certain areas of photography in which members do work in on a cyclical basis every year: those which directly reflect the four seasons. I'm thinking of a whole variety of subjects; standard landscape, nature, and wildlife, of course, but also photos of seasonal events -- which may include "people pictures" -- as well as abstracts, impressionistic works...the list goes on and on.

Most everybody here accumulates a new body of such seasonal works every year. Until now, DUers had to shoehorn these photos into whatever monthly contest theme seemed most appropriate, or else try to get a monthly topic chosen that would fit their work. But there are enough possible monthly topics that it's downright impractical to devote one or more to the same theme year after year.

My solution: starting in November, I will be (hopefully co-)hosting quarterly contests, to be held in addition to the usual monthly contests, on the theme of Scenes of the Season. Any images will be welcome, as long as they evoke the qualities of the season in question. Entries will be collected for each season, beginning on the following dates:

Autumn - November 1
Winter - February 1
Spring - March 1
Summer - August 1

The seasonal contests will be held in the first two weeks of the month, so as not to conflict with the regular monthly contests. All of the usual rules will apply, except a) the winner is not expected to host the next contest (although they might be asked to assist), and b) the host is allowed to submit an entry of her or his own.

This will free the monthly contests from exchanges such as the following:

"We should make 'Autumn' the topic for next month."
"We already did that last year."

or

"Why can't we have a 'Winter' image contest?"
"Because that discriminates against people in warmer parts of the country."*

It would also allow monthly contests to be on more specific themes, and even "conceputal" themes like Strength or Unity, while still allowing DU photographers to submit their more picturesque images for the appropriate seasonal event. (The corollary would be that "photos of the current season" would be off-limits as a specific monthly topic while these are being run.)

I'm going to be starting this up on my own, and intend to run them for the indefinite future. However, I would like a second host and would welcome a volunteer, at least for the first contest. I would like this mainly because, since the host(s) can submit their own images, having two of them would help to guarantee impartiality. (The way I would plan it, if one or both hosts get their photos in the final, the final would be run by whichever host had the lowest number of votes in the preliminaries.) After the first run-through, we could see if anyone else wished to co-host, or might even go back to the tradition of having the last winner co-host. If no one else steps forward, I will host these on my own, but think it would be better with two hosts.

And, let me make this clear: these will be official contests, not "challenges." As far as I'm concerned, if it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it's a duck (unless it's another one of CC's winning bird entries ;-) ).

So, if anyone wants to help me out, please contact me. The rest of you, start thinking about your entry for Scenes of Autumn, starting on November 1.

*Actually, it doesn't -- Christmas lights on a palm tree could serve as a "winter" motif. No need for snow or ice to get the point across.

4. Grew up in New England.
Lived for some years in Colorado.

I know damn well there will be nothing that evokes "autumn" or "winter" to me here in tropical Mississippi. So I'll sit these out and join this event in the spring. :hi:

7. Fine, but you never know what you may find...
You may discover something completely appropriate for one of those seasons even if you don't expect to. (But I know how you feel -- I remember all-too-well what it was like, after more than a decade in New England and the Middle Atlantic states, spending my first autumn in the San Fernando Valley, where the only reds and yellows in the hills came from the frequent canyon fires.)

5. Oops...! MAJOR typo in schedule...
Earlier, I wrote:

Autumn - November 1
Winter - February 1
Spring - March 1
Summer - August 1

Obviously, considering this is on a quarterly cycle and that the Winter submissions are in February, the Spring submissions aren't going to be only one month later. The actual deadlines should read:

Autumn - November 1
Winter - February 1
Spring - May 1
Summer - August 1

Sorry about that...

9. Oh good....
>>The seasonal contests will be held in the first two weeks of the month, so as not to conflict with the regular monthly contests.<<

So now I'm gonna have to play for the entire month in November, February, May, and August. The bosses aren't going to like this...

Just kidding. Great Idea!

10. what exactly does being the (co)host involve?
Because I've been meaning to be more involved here and I would be happy to help out if it doesn't take too much of my time.

Given the care taken to schedule the challenges/contests on the first of the month follwing the first full month following the solstice/equinox, I'd infer that it'd be required/expected/suggested that the photos be current rather than from years past ... no?

When I think of our "Sunsets On DU Land" group effort, I get nostalgic. I thought there was a kind of 'magic' in photo-journaling the setting of the sun across the globe on the same day. I wish it were in http://www.forumphotogroup.com/Competitions

Oh well.

:hi:

Took me awhile to find them cause' I couldn't get into the photogroup archives, but I did have them on my old hard drive and eventually tracked them down....

http://www.forumphotogroup.com/gallery/1920036

That was a special day for me. A bunch of people connected by an event of nature, their cameras, and the internet. Course' there was a blizzard going on here that day. For those of you looking in the gallery link above mine is the Blue :P pic with the trees. Hey, now that would have been a kewl 'Trees' entry.

Also, for those that weren't around then all of us included our longitude/latitude with the sunset pic we took. Myself and intheflow couldn't actually see any sunset so we had to go by the 'time' since we had a little snow going on then.

It'd be nice to repeat that day. On EDIT: Yes, there was a certain 'Magic' to that day... as you say.

14. Thanks for putting that up, F(lash)!
There was really something 'spiritual'(?) about knowing that over a dozen other DUers were collaborating in sharing their own personal perspectives of the setting sun on the very same day. It was a sense of connection - almost like being a Druid. :dunce:

I'm hopeless when it comes to aptly expressing that feeling ... that even though our individual experiences were unique, we extended that experience to include others. That's special, imho. Does that make me a romantic? Such puzzlements (ephemeral notions) are much of why I call myself a 'Nut.' (Gladly.)

13. Not necessarily...
...at least not for the first year or so. Afterwards, if people want to restrict choices to only photos shot that year, it might become part of the rules. But, if I were to make a choice for the Autumn contest right now, I'd likely choose one particular photo I took last year (but after last November 1st, so one might still claim that it was shot during the last year, I guess). In any event, at least for the moment, any photos evocative of the season in question are eligible, no matter what year they were taken.
