2. Dunno what Raging's point is
but since I can get around 300 high quality shots on my 256, I can't even imaging filling an 8 gig card.

(Not to mention that it costs more than my camera did!)

5. I shoot only in RAW, so it takes up more space
And I tend to shoot a lot when I shoot. So even with my 1 GB memory cards, I found that it was not enough, even though I would get over 100 shots with each card.

4. I had no idea there was an 8.0 GB memory card
I just finished buying a 4.0 with my 5D. This was after buying several 1.0 GBs thinking that was all I would ever need.

12. Actually, SanDisk just released an "Extreme IV" 8 GB card...
...meaning that the "Ultra II" you linked to is actually their second-tier card in terms of performance.

If you're doing photojournalism and shooting RAW with a 12.8 MP camera, you might need one.

When I got my KM5D, I picked up three "Ultra II" 1 GBs, each of which holds 80 RAW files. I thought that would be enough until last weekend, when I used up all 240 shots on the Olympic day-trip. Suddenly, the possibility to fit 640 RAW shots on one memory card sounds pretty enticing...

13. Yes, I noticed this was an ultra II
I bought the Extreme IV 4 GB with my camera. That is why this was shocking because I thought I had the ultimate, but I'm still a step behind.

3. Way too much money for that small amount.

$299.00 also gets you 30 Gigs here...

And with this, it stores all RAWs and Jpegs for preview on a 2.5" screen...with music!

Besides loading RAW files to computer by firewire is a lot faster than any card reader I've seen.

There's also card readers for iPod too.

6. But those are not memory cards
It wasn't the price I was exclaiming over, it was the fact that there is an 8 GB memory card. It wasn't too long ago that they only made a 1 GB card.

7. Ok, but my point is that a memory card isn't necessary

8. I don't think I'm able to connect one of those hard drives to my camera
if that is what you're referring to. And if it was possible, I wouldn't trust that it would be fast enough to record the images that I take.

9. Some reviewers say it's slow because of USB on the camera
...which is the real problem with transferring large files, not the iPod. It's strange that the better ones haven't gone firewire yet. But there's also a card reader dock that hooks into the iPod as well. So, a couple of 1 Giggers should do you for about 55-60 shots a piece, then download it into your iPod, and erase. Downloading from iPod to computer is lickety split!

There's a reviewer that has used the first product on their 5D, so it does work.

10. I bought an I-Pod for this purpose
Only to return it when I realized it wasn't as efficient as I thought it would be. When I shoot, I don't have time to sit there and wait several minutes for a card to download.

It takes much longer to download photos on the I-pod then it does to download photos on some of the other hard drives that are made specifically for photos. Of course, you don't get to store music in these hard drives.

I bought one of these hard drives after I returned the I-Pod, but I wasn't completely satisfied with it. Apparently, I need to spend much more to get one that really suits my needs. I'm waiting until the prices drop.

Until then, I'm going to stock up on high-capacity memory cards because even if I do have a portable hard drive, sometimes I just don't have the extra five minutes that it takes to empty a memory card. Hell, I've missed shots just switching memory cards.

11. Try running out of film when the bride is walking down the aisle.
:scared: That film rewind takes FOR EVER! I used to get pretty good about unloading and loading film, but those auto winds were slow compared to how fast I used to be able to spin those cranks. CF cards are a godsend..if I already have them out of their little plastic prisons.

I've been reading some reviews of these products, and people seem to have all kinds of problems with them. The battery drain on the iPod from writing to it's HD seems real problematic. So you got a point. This solution may not be ready for prime time.

14. Yeah, 8 GB would be nice
I just bought a 2 GB card before going on my trip to Montana (where I am now) but then forgot to put it in my camera and left it at home. :( I've had to make do with a 1 GB card that allows only about 180 raw shots on my D70. Very restrictive. OTOH, it's really made me concentrate on the shots and think about my framing and exposure. But I do miss being able to shoot with abandon and getting the odd serendipitous shot.

16. On my 10D, I get about 130 RAW shots from a 1 GB
Now on my 5D, I get more than 300 shots on a 4 GB.

But when I shot film, I obviously didn't have anything more than 36 shots and I was a lot more selective and conservative in what I shot.

Since going digital, I've gotten into the habit of shooting multishot bursts to get that perfect photo. But lately, I've been trying to be more selective in how I use that style of shooting because my memory card tends to get filled quickly.
