Imagination needed...
Edited on Wed Jun-28-06 12:08 AM by Blue_In_AK
I'm getting ready to get a business license so I can sell some pictures and write off all this camera gear, camping trips, etc. but I can't come up with a good name for myself. My legal transcription business I just call ***** ****** Legal Services because I don't have to have a web site or anything for that - I only do work for one contractor anyway, so a name is kind of immaterial. But for this picture thing, I need something a little more jazzy. I don't want to limit it to just Alaska-themed because there's a possibility that I might take some photos Outside sometime that I'd want to post on my website, so can anybody think of something clever for me?

ed. By "Outside" I mean Lower 48. That's what we call the rest of the United States.

2. In the spirit of brainstorming.-- "Our Land Photography."
It seems that a lot of what you show celebrates "the commons" and Ma Gaia. You could include some Woodie Guthrie info as a bonus. (Like the Wikipedia link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woody_Guthrie or the mp3 of the song http://www.lib.virginia.edu/small/exhibits/music/audio/mp3.hold/this_land.mp3 )

That name would not keep you from including images from Bali or Africa, or of people or urban settings. But the message in that name would be consistent with your approach to photography, based on what I have seen. And a quick Google shows nothing similar on the web.

3. The name I think that would be perfect for your biz is
already taken. It was Northern Lights Photos. But I googled it and there is something based out of Seattle called that.

http://www.northernlightsphoto.com/

Maybe you can go with Northern Lights Photography. You can still go with Northern Lights Photos because that company is based in a different state.

I know you said you didn't want to limit your biz name to an Alaskan-themed name, but I think you should because not only are you based out of Alaska, most of your photos are taken there. And even though you might take photos in other states, you are primarily an Alaskan photographer and it's smart to market yourself in regard to your area of expertise or geographical area. By doing this, you can capitalize on the people who want photos from Alaska. You're in the Last Fronteir so you need to give them what they don't have access to.

It's the same thing I'm doing with my business. I called it Magic City Media because Miami is the Magic City. It was nicknamed that in the early 1900s because it seemingly became a city overnight without ever being a town. Like magic.

But once I complete the redesign of my site, I will have photos from Havana, Colombia, New York, DC, etc. But Miami is my main base. And like Alaska, there are many people who are fascinated with Miami even though they've never been here.

So how about something like "North Star Photos" or "Klondike Photos" or "Artic Photos".
