Another help me pick my contest pic thread.

Since they haven't started stripping the siding off my house, but have me running around getting this and that, I went digging for architecturephotos. Now I need help deciding which one to use. Could also use help with names. On the siding, was hoping they might of exposed the post and beams with wood plugs instead of nails for a photo before the contest. Course not sure if they will expose them at all but plan on taking pics this time if they do.

1. A very tough call!

I ultimately chose the old barn - because it has a certain quality to it, like it wants to tell a story. But they are all beautiful!

2. While I voted for "Old Library"

I also really like Holly Hill, Dutch House, and Old Barn. Probably should have voted for Old Barn since I have a soft nostalgic spot for old stuff. I like that way the nature seems to be consuming that Old Barn taking it into the earth. Old Library just really grabs my imagination... see a building not unlike Dr. Who's telephone booth.

Must confess that my understanding of architecture photos as they relate to this contest has drifted into the fog. Not sure what constitutes a "good" archie shot. See it as being very subjective... no idea how anything can be "judged".

Regardless... from what I've seen it should be an interesting contest....

6. The old library is

really named that. It is in Old New Castle, DE and was the first library building there, around 1740 or 50 something. Same with Dutch House, one of the original Dutch colony houses. And people still live in it. Great building and history there but very strict building codes on what you are allowed to do because of the history. The old barn is literally in a small backyard in the middle of the old town surround by semi city and suburbs.

3. I chose Holly Hill because

when I first saw it I thought it had been photoshopped or shot through some kind of soft-edge filer. Something about the watr marks on the wall and the greyish bushes behind the house. When I realized it was a straight-on photo, that's when it became my fav. :thumbsup:

7. I call that my dream house

since I would love to live there but it is and always will be only a dream. Not special filters but was shot off the back of a ferry with a damp lens. Lots of water spray was being wiped off. But had to have a pic of that house. Took dozens and dozens to only get one.

5. I picked 'District House' because it portrays a love of light.

Indeed, I guess I could call it 'Photo Synthesis" ... in that the architectural theme of the house is "greedy for sunlight". This is made evident in the photo - the angle of the sunshine being the most evident clue. The sublter elements in the photo are the leaves on the trees, whose function is to absorb sunlight.

So ... we've got the basics of photography done well - focus exposure and color balance - and a shot that's well-composed, including the incorporation of a leafy frame and the angle of the sunlight.

So, for those reasons, it's 'District House' in my book. Do I make any sense whatsoever?
(Whew! It really takes effort - both mental and keyboarding - to aesthetically process these 'pick-em' questions!)

8. I really like the way you answer

those quick questions, keep it up. You do give lots of info that is very helpful. This one would be my second dream house but is in the city I fell in love with. I noticed in the Garden district that there are so many beautiful potential photos, if you can move the cars, people and power lines out of the way. As for getting some of the houses, Ann Rices limo was in the way of one of hers, then her other one (the Mayfair House) and Trent Reznor's had so many trees, plants etc that you got a better wild garden picture that you ever could house picture.

I rather doubt my way of choosing is common. Even I tend to look at the hillside house and go "Wow! I'd sure like to have a place like that!" (The house and its setting is inherently dramatic.) In other words, I'd be looking at the photos like I was shopping for a home. But I'm kinda doubting that's what photography is all about. Just because I might prefer one house over another doesn't mean I think that's the best photograph.

I guess it's a lot like movies. I might enjoy one movie far more than another (often due to the plot/storyline) but that doesn't mean that the awards given to that other movie are invalid.
