1. I can't believe this.
We're freaking out because it's 40 degrees and the snow is all melting --right before the Arctic Winter games and all the big sled dog races. Something very bizarre is going on with the weather.

2. There's nothing to this global warming, though
If I could, I would send this your way. I prefer the nice 70 and 80 degree weather we had last week.

3. I wish you could send it to us, too...
I used to live in Marin County back in the early '70s. I don't think I remember any snow down that way back then. Lots of rain this time of year, but certainly no snow. It's just WRONG. It's supposed to cool back down here in a few days, but at this rate, there will be no snow left to save. It's been a really weird winter here - we had a lot of snow early, and we had some really cold weather in January, but there have been many thaws, and it seems like since New Year's every time it snows it warms up right afterwards. Back in the old days, we'd get maybe one warm wind each winter, but it would soon chill back up. For the last 5 years or so it's just been freeze, thaw, freeze, thaw, all through the winter. You just can't count on anything anymore.

4. I've lived in the Napa Valley for 21 years
and I've given up on predicting the weather. Used to be you could count on the first rain at the beginning of November, bright and sunny for Thanksgiving. Then on into rainy season from December to February. Perfect spring with lots of wildflowers, two days of really hot weather around July 17th and then on into pleasant and colorful fall. Not no more.

We have weird frosts in June just as the grapes are setting interspersed with 100 degree+ temps. 80 degree temps in winter alternated with snow. I think erratic is the best word for it.

5. that's the thing to remember about global warming
there is reason to think that the additional heat will make for more extreme weather, with a overall hotter temp, but lots of more severe weather, because no matter what kind of weather, it will be in a system
where there is more water vapor in the atmosphere.

So while continentality may make for some real scorchers in the mid summer the wet seasons will probably be wetter, with longer drenching storms in places like Iowa.

So the bottom line is I think of a New Quantum Weather instead of global warming (because it may get colder in some places.) because that is what I think our weather systems are trying to do. Reach equilibrium by getting as much heat out of the system as quickly as possible.

In doing that, a new level of energy is being shuffled around and so collisions between systems are more violent. Alaska and Greenland are getting hammered.
