Fun at zero degrees...eight pix.
Edited on Wed Jan-25-06 01:32 AM by Blue_In_AK
HullBoss and I went for a little hike this afternoon to Thunderbird Falls which is a little ways north of here. The falls were frozen, of course, and I couldn't really get a good shot of them in the shade, but here are a few others. It's been gorgeous here, but really, really cold.

Yours truly, Blue_in_AK

1. Beautiful!
Very, very nice. Love the "spirit houses", whatever those are.

And here I am in Texas, putting off taking some city night shots I've been wanting to do, because it's in the 40's at night. Too cold!

2. Nice shots
Loved the Russian Orthodox Church - Eklutna Native Village picture. A thick snow cover like that can make for good pictures.

3. Now I'm cold, but they're beautiful! Can you explain
what those spirit houses are about? I love that pic!

4. They are graves...
Here's little write-up I found about them.

The Athabascan culture is a blend of Eskimo beliefs and Russian Orthodox introduced by Russian settlers in 1741. This is a culture that has
developed to making "spirit houses" a house over the grave of their deceased to keep their spirit from wandering. Each colorful house is adorned with symbols of the family and a Russian Orthodox cross. In their grave they also bury their belongings with the individual to appease the spirit after death. In the Eklutna cemetery there are spirits that are supposedly not appeased by the houses and their belongings and still wander the earth.

6. Extreme cropping ...
(Subtitle: I love my new camera.) When I was looking at the full-sized version of the fog picture I noticed the trees silhouetted in the sun. I can't believe I could crop this much without the photo dissolving into pixels.

11. Hi, Nelly...
Yes, I am very happy. Things have finally settled down in my life (about time) after many, many years of tumult. My life's been a rollercoaster - F. Gordon's photo comes to mind - but for now, I'm in the tunnel of love. :)

12. Finally get to really look at
these. Another set of beautiful AK photos. Hard to pick favorites though would have to go with Spirit Houses and the spider web.
