Fun with lenses
A quick post before Keith.
These were taken from the same spot, the first at 10 mm, the second at 260.

2. I know. It just amazes me...

In that first shot you can hardly even see the city. The way it "really" looks is about halfway in between these two.

4. Yes, it is
I love the way it captures the big sky. I'm going to really have fun with it this summer.

5. Whoa!
I had no idea there was a city in the first shot! :wow:

And the lighting in the second one is just stunning! :wow: Did you have to use the tripod to get that clarity at that distance?

6. The city is slightly right and down of center in the first shot
if you couldn't find it. Yes, I used the tripod for both. The 70-300 does have image stabilizer, but I'm sure even with it the shots would fuzz out some as it gets closer to 300. I wanted to make sure this would be as clear as possible. The lighting that day was really perfect, but most of my shots came out a little on the dark side -- probably that stupid aperture thing again, I don't know -- but a few minor adjustments with the PSP fixed them right up.

7. Your WIDE shot (or, why I suck at landscape)
You didn't center the horizon which I always do. :-( Apparently that's a landscape No-No. Suppose to pick either the sky or the foreground to consume most of the shot when shooting WIDE. Or, that's what "they" say.....

Very nice!!! Can't wait to see some big blue sky shots.

Are you using a filter with the 10-20mm? I don't see any vignettes. I finally had to break down and get a thin polarizer filter cut for wide angle lenses. It's very nice but you can't attach your lens cap to it. :( If you start using the wide a lot in the summer you might want to add a thin polarizer filter to your "wish list". You'll love what it does with blues and greens..... and NO vignettes.
:woohoo:

11. I put the UV filters on all the lenses.
And the lens caps go right over them. The camera guy said that it's a good idea to keep the filter on to protect the lens. Makes sense to me.

9. Yes, it's Anchorage...
If you're familiar with the city at all, these were taken from the pull-out right after the Earthquake Park parking lot before you get to Point Woronzof.

12. I moved here in May 1975...
Did we cross paths? You probably wouldn't know Anchorage now ... it's really grown a lot, but calmed down quite a bit. It used to be like the Wild West here back in the late '70s with all the Pipeline boom. Now they've cleaned up Fourth Avenue, gotten the hookers off of Spenard. Chilkoot Charlie's still rocks on, though. (I haven't been in there in YEARS.)

13. Could be. I passed through in Nov 75
I was kind of busy in May running from the NVA.

Had a 3 day lay over, never so cold in all my life.

14. That was an extremely cold winter...
Edited on Sat Dec-31-05 04:44 PM by Blue_In_AK
I remember. When I took my daughter out trick-or-treating that year it was like 25 below or something. She was dressed as the Michelin man. We don't get 'em like that anymore with global warming. It's hardly gone below zero for the past 10 years, at least here in Anchorage. It's 26 right now -- pleasant, really.

By the way, I'm glad you were a fast runner. :)

15. try landing there and not expecting to stay
having been in a tropical country for 3 years. I was wearing everything I had, and people were looking at my tanned face like I was from another planet.

16. Yep. I went through in November (14?), 1969 coming back from Nam.
The plane stopped there for refueling. We were able to get off and stretch. No jetramps. Jungle fatigues. Coooold. :scared: :scared:
