The Black Company by Glen Cook
I just started reading this series and I must say, I'm hooked almost immediately! It's dark and gritty and well written! Anyone else read any of these book?

BTW, these were recommended to me by Kephra *sniff*...

1. Simply Awesome Series
It goes on for about 10 books, IIRC. The last one ends just perfectly, IMO.

3. One of my all time favorite fantasy series
I just finished re-reading it. Great stuff. If you like it check out his Dread Empire series. It's out of print so you will have a hard time finding it, but I liked it even more than the Black Company.

4. Great series
the Battle of Charm got me hooked immediately(I think this happens around page 100 or so)....and the rest of the series just FLEW by...and the ending...the ending.

Usually, the book series I read, usually start good, and end horribly, and I must admit...the Black Company series started good, and the ending was amazing...hands down the best ending of any series I've read(although the Dark Tower is a close second)....

5. Did You Read ALL The Books?
Edited on Mon Nov-19-07 01:51 PM by Beetwasher
Are you talking about the ending of the first trilogy, or the ending all the books so far "Soldiers Live"? (although I read he's got another book coming out at some point, so supposedly that wasn't really the ending).

FYI, if you dig these books, you'll love Steven Erikson's Malazan Empire series. If you haven't done so already, start this series! He actually dedicates his latest book to Glen Cook.

6. The last book in the series was Soldiers Live
which I thought, was a great/fantastic way to end the series. If there are more beyond that book, let me know asap! :)

The battle of charm I believe was in book 1, around page 100-150, with hundred's of thousands of troops descending upon The Lady, and the Taken...that battle was awesome. Cook really writes big battles, rather well, and makes it appear/seem realistic.

As a matter of fact, I'm thinking of rereading this series, I know I've forgotten a quite a bit, and it would be nice to revist Croaker, Goblin, and the rest of the crew again. :)

7. Cool!
That's the last book, but I read somewhere he's got another book planned.

I loved the way that Cook had no reservations about killing off characters, even though I was sad to see them go! By the last book pretty much everyone of the original company was dead (w/ the exception of Croaker and Lady).
