I believe I've found a Harry Potter error...
Thestrals... can only be seen by people who have witnessed death.. Harry doesn't see them in the 4th book.. he only begins to see them in OOTP, after watching Cedric die... but, Harry had already witnessed at least one other death (Quirrel), and you can also argue that he should have been able to see them all along since he watched his mother die when he was still a baby...

1. J.K. Rowling explains wonderfully
on her website www.jkrowling.com under FAQ's. Mugglenet and hplexicon also have examined this and started with the same logical premise you did. The explanation was that in the book, The Philosopher/Sorceror's Stone, Quirrel actually dies in front of Dumbledore. Harry had passed out. The movies made it overt when the book explicitly did not. So, well now you know. ;)

5. I wondered about that as well.
But my question was why didn't Harry see them when he left Hogwarts in TGOF after he had seen Cedric die?
Also did he not see his parents, at least his mom, die when he was a year old?

6. seeing his mom die
As he was very young, we know he was there, but to actually witness it.. not sure... he could have had his eyes closed (he was a baby afterall) or perhaps he needs to be conscious of the death....

7. Rowling has said
that Harry was in his crib at the time and didn't actually see it happen.

8. another error - Goblet of Fire (book)
when harry and voldemort have wands locked and the ghosts start appearing..

the effect divulges the spells in REVERSE order.. but when it comes to Harry's parents popping out -- HIS DAD shows up before his MOM.

We know that Voldemort killed James first, and then killed Lily

so in a true reverse order - his mom should have shown up, and then his dad

10. JKR totally owned up to that one.
She's also screwed up some ages for some of the characters too. GOF was when she was having her meltdown writing and offered to give back advances and everything. The publishers then completely left timing of the books and completion to her.
