Classical radio sucks! Can anyone recommend a good stream?
Edited on Wed Aug-17-05 06:16 PM by stopbush
Cripes, it's all-Baroque, all the time! If I hear the Water Music or the Brandenburgs once more, I'll puke.

Can anyone recommend an internet stream of a decent classical station that plays works over 4 minutes long?

Thanx!

1. Have you looked at the B.B.C.
Radio 3 is varied.

You have to get the right programme (schedules are listed) but the entire station is classical music, jazz, world music and serious discussion.

I mainly listen to it in the morning (U.K. time) which provides relatively little speech between music, combines short pieces with longer ones (though usually under half an hour), and short news bulliteins - a good variety of music played as well. The night-time programme (which runs from about midnight to 7 a.m.) is even better for playing longer pieces with very little commentary. Every evening there is a genuine concert (currently being the Proms - each of which is carried live). The evening 'drive-time' one makes me want to vomit - I would gladly kill its presenter (I don't know why but he drives me insane - totally irrational of me, I'll freely admit).

Several of the programmes are available on demand for a week after original broadcast.

2. Have I got a station for you!
http://www.allclassical.org

out of Portland, Oregon

This is the station I used to volunteer for. It's non-commercial, run by a non-profit foundation, and the announcers have nearly complete freedom to play what they please.

Check out their playlists. Last time I tuned in, they played Benjamin Britten's "Variations on a Theme by Frank Bridge." They also broadcast concerts from around the country and around the world.

After midnight Pacific Time, they broadcast Music Through the Night from WFMT-FM in Chicago.

To top it off, the staff are all Democrats. :-)

3. I listen to a Danish station
DR Klassisk

http://www.dr.dk/

I like their mix, generally, though they tend towards opera some afternoons...which I'm not too thrilled with.
