Need help figuring out which type of provider to call.
A friend has convinced me that I should get some help. I don't know what kind of help I need though. Counselors, therapists, pshychologists, psychiatrists... I have no idea which one would be best suited to help me with my issues.

Is anyone here involved in the profession? If so, would it be possible for me to maybe PM what I'm going through, and maybe you could please offer some advice as to whom to call?

Thanks...

6. don't be afraid to try another if this one doesn't fit.
sometimes it takes a couple of deadends to get where you are really going. hope the first one works for you, tho.
sorry you are having troubles.

8. yeah, it's not like making an appointment to get your car fixed.
the "intake process" can be downright painful.
just wanted to add to a couple comments here about the different types of professionals. psychiatrists, as mentioned, don't do therapy much anymore, just prescribe and monitor meds. the good ones still do at least half hour appointments. i don't think much of the guys who do 15 minute med checks. at least not for patients less than a year into the process. psychologists, who are phd's, do the talk therapy. many have a psychiatrist that they work closely with, and for any serious problems, that is what you want, i think. clinical social workers also do talk therapy, but are usually a little more practically focused, things like substance abuse, family problems, adolescent crapola, etc.
don't expect overnight miracles. it is a long process. and not fun.
hope all goes well for you. please do check in from time to time, and let us know how you are doing.

7. I echo mopinko's suggestion
Don't feel pressured to stay with the person if the chemistry is not right. YOU are the customer here.

Usually I would suggest with starting with a psychologist or licensed clinical social worker- both are well-trained and they can refer you to a psychiatrist for meds if you both think you want to try them.

Most psychiatrists these days don't do psychotherapy- they mostly prescribe meds.
