Thank God. I finally got hired on as a permanent employee.
I've worked for a company as a temp since 1/7/07 with the understanding that I would be hired on as a permanent employee after I accumulated 1500 hours of service time. Well, I had the 1500 hours done by the first week of July. They really put me on edge by taking so long to hire me. My first day as a regular employee will be later on tonight. The job is 3rd shift.

I was beginning to think that I had put in all of that time for nothing. What has really hurt me over the past 7+ months is that fact that my health insurance through the temp service sucks. I have a psychiatric disorder called schizoaffective disorder and it has cost me a boat load of cash to treat it since I've been working for the temp service- about $400 a month. I still have to wait 3 months before my benefits kick in at my new employer, but it is good to know that they are finally coming.

The reason I stayed on so long is because it's a really good job. I'm a trucker and the pay is good at the new company and it gets me home every day with weekends off, something most truckers desire after they've spent some time on the road.

both on the permanent job, and keeping it together without insurance. this family would be screwed to the wall without it.

2. Thank you
I had some help from my family. I was able to live rent free and my mom and step-dad's until June so that helped me out quite a bit.

3. congrats..I am kind of in the same situation as you right now
a temporary (whose benefits are soo sucky I have COBRA on my insurance from my last perm. position) supposedly I will become permanent in October but I hear from those here (most have been temp to perm) it can take a looong time (10 months in one case). ANd I can barely afford my COBRA right now.
I hate this temp to hire stuff. Why can't companies just have stuck with the probationary period stuff. I guess like everything else it's CHEAPER this way.

I'm doing better than I have in a long time. I've got my own pad, my expenses are under control, I'm starting to lose some weight, and I've got a good new job.

10. Have you considered...
Trying to get on one or more of the drug company plans? They have a sliding scale for what you get charged for meds.

Your psychiatrist can tell you more about them, to be sure.

15. Thanks for the tip, TS
I think I might make too much money for the sliding scale deal to be effective. Not that I make a lot of money, but I think it's still probably enough that it would disqualify me from any charity type deals. But I will ask my shrink about it. Couldn't hurt to ask.

11. Congrats!
That job does seem like a blessing! I have a friend who is a trucker, and he didn't know what state he was going to be in next week. I'm glad you have something stable down :)

12. congratulations, Droopy!
yeah, it is sad how many of our jobs are part time, so the employer doesn't have to offer benefits, etc.

Good for you!

I think the temp services are a scam to rip off working people. They don't reward loyalty that's for sure.
