Vatican condemns Israel for attacks on Lebanon
Fri Jul 14, 2006 5:13 PM IST7

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican on Friday strongly deplored Israel's strikes on Lebanon, saying they were "an attack" on a sovereign and free nation.

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano said Pope Benedict and his aides were very worried that the developments in the Middle East risked degenerating into "a conflict with international repercussions."

"In particular, the Holy See deplores right now the attack on Lebanon, a free and sovereign nation, and assures its closeness to these people who already have suffered so much to defend their independence," he told Vatican Radio.

Israel struck Beirut airport again on Friday and bombed Lebanese roads, power supplies and communication networks in a widening campaign after Hizbollah guerrillas seized two Israeli soldiers and killed eight.

As a Catholic I've been rather heavily scrutinizing Pope Benedict since he became the new pope. However, in light of some of his recent actions (like the above) I'm thinking he is far from being the monster that has been portrayed. It was unfair!

Pope Benedict, thank you for condeming these horrific acts!

2. I don't know
I find him to be a very interesting pope. When he made that statement about the concentration camps of "Where was God?" it made me know that he is just another human being too. Where was God?

Where is God now?

I bet he is asking the same question once again as am I.

God, where are you anyway? God, would you please do something about the mess the world is in and care for your children?

I ask this of you God.

3. I agree..
But it just seems to me that everyone is freaking out that Israel is defending herself, but no one seems to get all upset when there are suicide bombs and car bombs going off all over their country. THAT is hypocracy of the worst kind...

4.  The suicide bombs aren't just random attacks for the fun of it.
There are reasons, and Bin Laden has spelled them out. The western powers can't just capitulate to
Bin Laden's every whim, but it would be good if they paid some attention. But this forum really
isn't the place to discuss these issues.

It would also help enormously to have a US president genuinely committed to peace.

God didn't make the mess, humans did, and it's up to humans to find the solutions.

Pope firmly condemns Palestinian terror bombing

Vatican, Apr. 19 (CWNews.com) - Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) firmly condemned a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv during his regular weekly public audience on April 19.

Saying that he had been deeply sorrowed to hear about the Monday attack, which killed 9 people in a crowded fast-food restaurant, the Holy Father said that he felt "the duty to express the firmest possible condemnation of such a terrorist act."

At least this was the first one I found from a quick search of the web.
