Archbishop Paul Marcinkus has died.
A central figure in what was a major scandal in the early years of Pope John Paul II's papacy,
generally known as the Banco Ambrosiano scandal, Archbishop Paul Marcinkus has died in Sun City,
Arizona.

I read David Yallop's book In God's Name, which all but named Marcinkus as a Mr Big of crime - I
don't buy everything Yallop said about the death of JPI, but there are certainly some question marks
over it, and the failure of Marcinkus to submit to questioning by the Italian police threw a
shadow over his career that he was never able to shake off. Not even his closeness to John Paul
could save him. He definitely came across as one of those prelates who tried to serve both God
and Mammon - and probably God came out second best.
