1. Oh, you're more than welcome IMO ...
I was guided by Franciscans in 1996 to convert to Catholicism. Therefore, you'll find my beliefs much more "liberal" than many others here.

But everyone is supposed to be welcome and this should be a safe place for us to discuss our faith.

Welcome! ;)

8. I'm not afraid of Catholics - I live in Wisconsin!
Edited on Wed Mar-30-05 12:33 AM by RevCheesehead
Yup. Land of Catholics, Cheese, and Beer. :)

Most of my closest friends are Catholic. Hell, most of the guys I've dated were Catholic, too.

I'm a liturgical Methodist. If I were male, I'd have to give Catholicism serious consideration. But my call to ministry far outweighs any call to denomination. Let's just say that "Northern Methodism" is the best fit for me.

edit to add: Actually, my concern is that you might not want me here, since I am, ah, .... well, what exactly am I? Flame-bait? A disruptor and hypocrite in my own sandbox? Or just cat-poop?

26. With all due respect, I doubt that you know yet how liberal
others in this group are. I have known most of them for some time, many for years, long before you were at DU, and I don't think anyone here is illiberal. Some of us are branded as conservative because we have a seamless garment approach to the pro-life ethic, being opposed to war, capital punishment, euthanasia, and abortion, and also to poverty and the social injustice that perpetuates poverty. But we disagree with the idea that pro-life progressive is an oxymoron and call on other progressives/ liberals to see how all these issues tie together in a seamless garment, such as Jesus wore.

You mention that you were converted by the Franciscans; perhaps you'll share your story with us at some point? I've never met any Franciscans in the U.S., though we had a Franciscan as our archbishop of Atlanta years ago; sadly, he died very young in 1992.

There are many wonderful saints and so I don't have one favorite but Francis of Assisi is very high on my list because of his commitment to the poor, his passion for God, his giving up the wealth of his father to serve God, his love of animals. He is also the patron saint of ecologists, which dovetails with my own specialization in aquatic ecology. I have a statue of him in my bog garden, near my little pond, and I had the profound spiritual joy of praying at Francis's tomb on Epiphany in 1995. I often pray the prayer attributed to him, "Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace."

10. Kinda puts a whole new spin on "liberal" and "progressive,"
don't it?

This forum is going to be homebase for me for awhile. Just too scared to venture out very far these days.

Thank you.

just a term you used on someone I know whose posts I often search because we're interested in the same topics.... I get to see a lot that happens while I'm asleep. Thank you.

27. Too true! But they're just going to have to learn to

coexist with us. People have tried to destroy the Church Militant for two thousand years and all attempts have failed; a handful of unhappy people at DU won't succeed, either.

I'm afraid of my sandbox right now. :scared:

I don't like carnage. Besides, I thought Jesus went through all this crap so we wouldn't have to.

17. We try to be honest with each other ... many of us disagree strongly
but the figurative knives are dull in this forum ... we try to find common ground. I'm as guilty as anyone of getting fiery when I feel my cause is just, but in the end, I think we all try to respect each other after each disagreement.

Thanks, I almost forgot my promise to you and myself. I'll put it on my "must do" list to cancel my membership and monthly donations to VFP.

Sincere thanks for the hard but valuable lesson. :-)

On Edit: Done! I really should have done my research before I joined. For that it's "my bad."

25. Welcome! I don't know which sandbox you refer to

but I have noted a lot of peeing in several sandboxes in this neighborhood. Some of our fellow DUers are simply not house-broken; probably need crate training.

When I proposed the group, I wanted a place where Catholic and Orthodox Christians (there are a few at DU who belong to or attend one of the Eastern Rite churches) could all be comfortable and attacks on our beliefs would not be allowed -- it's in the guidelines. But anyone is certainly welcome, whether a Christian or Jew, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, agnostic, atheist, as long as they play by our rules of respecting the Catholic Church's teachings, hierarchy, etc. That doesn't mean people can't discuss issues, can't say they disagree with the pope or this bishop or that one, or even that they don't agree with a particular Church teaching, only that they have to be respectful in doing so. IN OTHER WORDS, NO PEEING IN THIS SANDBOX!!!

As of yet, we haven't had too many theological discussions, unfortunately. That's largely, I think, because we're all stretched so thin, trying to keep up with all the issues everyone at DU is concerned about, trying to calm the constant outbursts against the Church, the Pope, etc., etc., and trying to have some liturgical threads, too.

Again, Welcome! :hi:

28. Oh, dear - just as I feared - this is NOT what I wanted to happen!!
I am looking for a place where we can talk to one another about a common meeting ground. I have absolutely no intention of provoking, starting, or continuing a flame-fest.

I left this thread alone last night because I did not want to bring my "issues" to this group. And yet, look at the above posts.

I'm sorry, guys. I didn't mean to bring the pee over to you.
Please forgive me.
