3. I was looking this morning myself
the last I heard Webb was only down by 5pts.
Are you volunteering for Webb? I've been thinking about getting involved ... such an important race so close to home.

4. I am gonna be going even more local
The congressional campaign though I guess I could volunteer for Webb since his HQ is in Falls Church/Arlington I believe. only 5 points though? That's good news. Allen tried to tie Webb's opposing of the flag burning amendment in to he's a radical liberal even though the second highest republican in the senate voted against it, McConnell. I haven't seen any ads though by Webb but have seen plenty by Allen.

6. E-mail from Webb ... Zogby ... may be a bit optimistic
Dear XXX,

Contribute to our campaign before the June 30th deadline!
George Allen has a race on his hands.

That's what respected pollster John Zogby said after his recent poll showed Jim Webb within six points of Allen -- a razor thin margin given that Allen is an incumbent.

Allen's campaign manager called the poll a "joke"—but at the same time he's running $1 million in television ads to polish up Allen's weak record in the Senate.

It seems George Allen is running scared. Help us keep him on the run by donating to our campaign before Friday's June 30th end-of-quarter deadline.

http://webbforsenate.com/contribute

Poll numbers will ebb and flow, but one fact is clear: the people of Virginia are ready for a change. While Jim intends to run a positive race on the issues, I'm afraid that our opponents are preparing to take the low road in an all-out effort to hang on to this seat. And they’ve already started.

On Tuesday, George Allen and his campaign implied that Jim’s position in support of the Free Speech Amendment to the U.S. Constitution amounted to a political act and not a defense of our Constitution.
The fact is Allen and his campaign have not earned the right to challenge Jim Webb’s position on free speech and flag burning. As Steve Jarding said, “While Jim Webb and others of George Felix Allen Jr.’s generation were fighting for our freedoms and for our symbols of freedom in Vietnam, George Felix Allen Jr. was playing cowboy at a dude ranch in Nevada. People who live in glass dude ranches should not question the patriotism of real soldiers who fought and bled for this country on a real battlefield.”

Provide us the resources we need to fight back against these weak-kneed attacks by cowards. Please rush a contribution to our campaign in the next 48 hours before Friday’s midnight deadline!

http://webbforsenate.com/contribute
We shouldn't be surprised that the attacks are already coming. Just take a look at the advisors Allen has hired.

Allen has hired Mary Matalin, a long-time advisor to Dick Cheney. He's hired Chris Lacivita, the architect of the Swift Boat campaign that smeared John Kerry's war record. And he's hired Dick Wadhams, a man whose last race featured the despicable intimidation of Native American voters and campaign workers breaking the law.

These are some of the roughest operatives in the business. With a $7 million war chest, there is no limit to the tactics they can use against Jim.

That's their team. Our team is all of you. We need to raise as much money as possible by the June 30th end-of-quarter deadline to respond to Allen's negative attacks and give Jim the resources he needs to campaign around the state.

Please contribute to Jim Webb's campaign before the June 30th end-of-quarter deadline. If you give us the resources, you have our word that we'll keep fighting until November -- and that on election day, Jim Webb will be the new senator for Virginia.

Thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Jessica Vanden Berg
Campaign Manager

P.S. Please contribute to our campaign today, and then forward this message to your friends. Invite them to join our campaign to bring true leadership back to the United States Senate.

7. Hey John -- from Not Larry Sabato is a more grim (and perhaps) real poll
http://notlarrysabato.typepad.com/doh/2006/06/crushing_poll.html

CRUSHING POLL
New poll

George Allen 56%
Jim Webb 37%

-------------------------------------------

UPDATE: After looking at the crosstabs, this poll looks like it could be on target.

First of all, Survey USA nailed the Governors race last fall.

Compare this poll to that one.

2005's poll showed 39% of Virginians considered themselves Republicans, 34% Democrats and the rest Independents.

This poll shows 44% Republicans (+5%), 32% Democrats (-2%) and the rest Independents.

Welcome to Virginia.

snip

Last years poll was 51% women, now this poll is 52% men. Democrats could complain if Webb lead among women, but he doesn't lead among either. Even if you moved the numbers to 51% women, Webb would gain 13 points margin among 3% of the population. Move that 3% both ways (women +3, men -3) and that movement means 0.13x 6% or 0.78% poll movement. Rounded UP- adjusting the gender number only moves the race ONE point overall to an EIGHTEEN point Webb deficit.

Time to deal with reality guys. Webb needs to overhaul his campaign immediately to stay competitive. More on this tomorrow.

Lots of rumors on that site about the campaign being in turmoil, and now this:

RUMORED SHAKEUP IN WEBB CAMPAIGN
RUMOR CIRCULATING THAT JESSICA THE CAMPAIGN MANAGER IS GOING TO BE DEMOTED TO DEPUTY CAMPAIGN MANAGER

WEBB CONSULTANT STEVE JARDING TO TAKE OVER AS CAMPAIGN MANAGER.

QUESTIONS CIRCULATING ON HOW STEVE CAN DO THE CAMPAIGN WHILE TEACHING CLASSES FIVE DAYS A WEEK AT HARVARD THIS FALL.

DEVELOPING.....

Someone said all of this points to ominous signs that the Webb campaign is beginning to look like the Dean campaign, the only difference being the crash and burn happening AFTER the primary. I hope they get their shit together. This was actually one of my greatest concerns with voting for Webb. Unfortunately, the very competent workers in Harris Miller's campaign have apparently already gone to other states, which is really a shame, because I thought Miller was more organized. Webb also needs to raise money, and fast. He's got very little and Allen has $7.5 million (although he wants to use it for '08, but still).

8. A lot of this speculation sounds like RW gossip used to discredit
the Webb's campaign. They always do this,Gore, Kerry just in recent memory. It is still early and Webb isn't as well known as Allen. The old name recognition thing you know. What needs to come out is some real lack of leadership and smarts about Allen. Although, I will add that being the tougher guy, is not going to be enough.

10. But NLS is pro-Webb. I think he's posting this stuff to prompt
action and quickly to save the Webb campaign from itself. I've read him for a month, and he's more of a "tell it like it is" blogger, unlike Raising Kaine which is straight and narrow pro-Webb, where people get banned for dissenting, which I think is wrong. I wish I could attribute this to the RW, but Webb's campaign has been plagued with problems from the beginning. The lack of fundraising is a fact, and that problem has been there from the start.

13. So he is being straight! Webb needs some advise from those who
have run before. It doesn't surprise me about the fund raising. He doesn't seem like a schmoozer or even a real smooth politician. he should be motivated to do all he can for his son though. It is still early though. Things can be worked out.
It is surprising that with Bush and the war both being received negatively, that Allen (who is a real Bush backer) would be doing this well.

15. I am not really surprised that Allen's doing well honestly
Yes, Bush is unpopular here and that helped Kaine but remember Allen was a governor and a popular one at that.

9. That's not good
I am surprised he hasn't got cash flowing in since many Senate Democrats including Schumer endrosed him. Bah so confusing.

11. But this is the "phony war" season, right, where no one is paying
attention. Now is the time to fix problems, and perhaps the DCCC has come in and told them no money until they get their housekeeping in order. At least on the surface it's looking good -- Webb got good press in my newspaper for the Felix rebuttal (although at the expense of Kerry -- the editorial in my paper had to make a dig about how he didn't fight back, and Webb won't make that mistake, sigh). So don't give up hope. Damn, I wish Warner had run. It's a long shot for Webb to win (and to be fair also would have been a long shot for Miller, too).

14. I wish he had run too
There was an article today about how Kaine and Warner plan to help Webb out the most they can so hopefully that will help.
