WASHINGTON -- A pair of Massachusetts lawmakers are hoping to catch a ride with the nation's big automakers.
Sen. John Kerry and Rep. Marty Meehan of Lowell, both Democrats, believe a pledge this week by Detroit automakers to double the production of alternative fueled cars can help drive the lawmakers' efforts to make the nation's cars more friendly to the environment.
"Detroit has committed itself to producing more flex-fuel vehicles," Kerry said in a statement. "Now it's Washington's turn."
Both lawmakers recently introduced different plans to decrease gas consumption while increasing the number of flexible fuel cars -- vehicles that run on a blend of ethanol and gasoline. They also call for a massive increase in flex-fuel pumping stations across the nation.

Kerry's plan calls for every new vehicle produced in the U.S. to be flex-fuel compatible by 2020. He's also calling on Congress to increase the fuel efficiency standards of gasoline-powered cars -- an issue met by intense resistance by automakers.
Under Kerry's plan, the United States would use 2.5 million fewer barrels of oil a day than now, he says. The U.S. currently uses about 21 million barrels a day, 13 million barrels of which are imported.
