Hey not only are we the biggest candidate group
We also got the most people under 21, I think of any. Enough of that myth that Kerry can't attract the youth eh. Why, I think many young people like Kerry is that he doesn't talk down to us and judging from his plans for the music if he had won the presidency, he understands good music too. Kerry to me is like a cool uncle honest, not really a father figure but an uncle figure, sorta like how Jack Kennedy in 1960 was revered as your cool older brother, and Ike was regarded as like your grandfather, no offense to Ike, heh. Kerry on, oh and I heard that quite a few times at the protest, I am beginning to remember stuff.

1. I don't think of John as my uncle
Edited on Tue Jan-25-05 12:02 AM by WildEyedLiberal
But this should come as no surprise to you

Honestly, his music tastes are part of what made me realize how f-ing cool he is. He likes GOOD, REAL music. Music I listen to. I just know that I would have NO problem spending a day wasting time and talking and hanging out with him... I think he'd be completely cool and easy to relate to. Oh, and HOT. :9 hahaha

3. I'm 21 and like Kerry for reasons similair to what you mention
Edited on Tue Jan-25-05 12:08 AM by TheDonkey
I really like how he doesn't talk down to me, and treat me (and the public) like we are idiots. I'm glad if a politician can be articulate and dare to think aloud.

I also think Kerry is pretty hip. He knows good music, snowboards, windsurfs, plays hockey and more. Even though he is about as old as my grandfather he doesn't seem like one to me.

4. I'm 23 and yes Kerry does attract the youth
Kerry got like 54% of the 18-30 vote (It's on Michael Moore's website somewhere.) The other day my brother (27 years old) said something about Dubya, "he talks to us like we're children."
The last thing we want to do is be treated like children. We aren't anyway. Kerry is like an ideal father figure (like my dad), he takes care of you, but he talks to you, adult to adult. That's why I think he got the youth vote. That and the fact he spoke out against the draft and we could believe him.

5. No doubt about it...
Kerry's pretty cool. Unlike Bush who is just... erm...

Oh, and Kleeb, I think it's so cute that you have that Orioles avatar. Ahhh, the naievety of youth....

Yeah, that's right, I'm a newly-jaded Red Sox fan. Forgive me, we need our moment in the sun and I didn't post this in the lounge because I didn't want to get attacked by the likes of Yavin4, Chavez et. al. with their assinine Yankees worship.

You planning on being a fan of the new Washington team?

7. hah, hey I went for the Sox in the ACLS
I hate the Yanks. Chavez at least was humble in the Yanks defeat, Yavin remained cocky as far as I know. Yeah I am gonna for the Nats.

10. Solid.
How could you not love the Sox this year (or always)? I'll never forget... I was not watching the last innings of the ALCS because I didn't want to see the Yanks tap dance on our heads again. So I was surfing DU and I saw this thread entitiled "Red Sox fans hold hands, now is when we win". I started reading it, and lo and behold I found out we tied it up. I went out and watched the end of the game.

In 2003 this Bostonian and I got our whole dorm floor (mostly Canadians and assorted folks from around the world) to cheer for the Sox. We had 30 people in there chanting "Let's go - Red Sox". Then they lost and we were in tatters. Next our Pakistani friend walked in and said something like "it's just a game". Knowing he knew nothing of *the rivalry*, I said "Imagine Pakistan was playing India in the world championship of cricket, and Pakistan just lost on the last play". His jaw dropped and he said "Ooooohhh... the last time that happened my little brother cried for three days". Then we all comisserated together with some pizza.

I think I'll go for the Nationals too, except for their awful name, which will surely be shortened to 'Nats. Oh, and that big W on their hats will easliy be mistaken for * campaign wear, so I'll have to get the DC hat. Other than that it should be good times. I needed an NL team ever since the Rockies management has been atrocious, which has been always. They can't even lose gracefully :(

13. Dude way back when
when I was like 9, when my birdies played the yanks in the 1996 ACLS, I remember Jeffrey Meier, and what that twirp did, it angered me so much, and I was brought up on Yankee hate by my dad, an old National League and Willie Mays fan. Ive always hated the Yankees, Ive always liked the sox, I hate to lose to them of course but I dont hate them, I was so happy and estatic to see them come back from a 3-0 debt against the hated yankees. I want the Yankees to be known as the greatest chokers ever.

16. I wasn't into baseball back then.
But I've never really understood peoples' problem with poor Jeffrey Meier. He was just trying to catch the ball, and he's just a kid. Now if you want to get mad at the umps for not calling fan interferance, I could understand that, but why did everyone take it out on Jeffrey? I fear he's scarred for life.

9. lot of Kerry supporters were not old enough to vote
but they still campaigned for him in other ways.

i remember when some young girl about 12 years old wrote a letter to dear abbey about how people laughed at her because she said she wanted to become president of the united states one day.

Kerry himself responded to that letter with encouraging words for that girl.

the little kids all love him also. even though they don't really understand issues they do have a good sense of who to trust or not trust and they all love Kerry.

i remember i had this pic of John Kerry and a 5 year old relative came over and she knew who he was right away and i talked to her about him for a while. i just thought that was so sweet.

24. it was easy for me to become a citizen
i was born in India but i came here when i was a year old. and i already had a lot of family here. my dad was already a citizen also. maybe that's why it was easy for me.

but i find some people have trouble in that it takes years before they are accepted and can take the test and the final citizenship thing.

Yeah, from what Ive been told about my great grandmother, my mom's mom's mom, she came here in about 1920 from Slovakia and married my great grandfather in 1922 around after his first wife had died of TB, my grandma tells me that she never really learned English that much nor got integrated in to American society.

30. most of my family left before i was born , i lived in Britain before
coming here. but even then i was still a year old when i came here.

i think it might have to do with the British colonialism. but a lot of my family long before i was born had moved into other parts of the world. so i have relatives mostly outside of india.

i actually don't have any relatives who actually live in india and make a living there. they mostly go just to visit or vacation like they are tourists.

32. my family is pretty lucky
they benefited in that they were able to get a good education and learn english which made moving to other countries easier than it is for most other immigrants. there wasn't a language problem and they had skills for a good job also.

it's kind of weird because when you think of india you think of the poverty and other problems. but when my relatives visit and show me pics the homes look really nice . they even have sattelite television and hbo at their homes. so it's almost like totally different worlds living together in the same place.

I never understood why the campaign didn't have him with kids all the time. It would have eliminated all that aloof, snobbish garbage. Have you ever seen kids relate to Bush this way? Never.

21. This 21-year-old also got that impression.
He must have strong memories of his own young adulthood and the terrible situations he was placed in.... He knows that it's definitely possible for us to be forced to grow up fast in certain ways because he experienced it. I think he cares deeply about us and wants us to have better experiences than he did at our age. He doesn't want another generation to be put through what his went through.

Bush** now, well, he treats us with contempt, but then so he does everyone who doesn't have gobs of money and doesn't worship at his feet.
