Maplewood political rivals battle after damage to historic gateBy Philip Sean Curran, Staff Writer Thursday, May 4, 2006 12:18 AM EDT
This wrought iron gate, located at the entrance to Hickory Drive, was damaged after David Huemer struck it with his car. The gates are remnants of an estate in which an uncle of former President Theodore Roosevelt used to stay in the summers during 1870s. MAPLEWOOD, NJ - The rivalry between Mayor Fred R. Profeta Jr. and Township Committee David Huemer took an odd turn last month — straight into a historic piece of Maplewood.Huemer was driving his car the morning of April 18, the day of the school election, through Maplewood. Around 9 a.m., he hit a wrought iron gate at the foot of Hickory Drive and Ridgewood Road.
Huemer was not injured, witnesses confirmed.
“He was OK,” said Risa Olinsky, who lives on Hickory Drive.
The same could not be said for the gate, however. According to Profeta, the crash caused “extensive” damage that will need to be fixed.
In an e-mail sent to the News-Record, Huemer wrote he got out of his car, looked at the gate and “did not notice anything wrong and moved my car.”
Profeta, who also lives on Hickory Drive, was home the day of the accident. A portion of the gate runs along his property, which he is responsible for maintaining. The mayor estimates that it will cost in excess of $1,000 to fix the damage, and he’s asking Huemer to foot the bill.
