new Kerry email
Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 11:03 AM by karynnj

Dear XXXXX,

One general after another demanding Rumsfeld's resignation. More citizens every day joining in support of our May 15 deadline for Iraqi leaders to stop their squabbling and form a government.

In these and many other ways, because of citizens like you, the wheel is slowly, but surely, turning on the question of Iraq. Over the next ten days, we're going to give it another huge push. But, before I tell you more, please take a moment right now to sign in support of the Kerry Iraq plan:

Sign our Out of Iraq in 2006 petition now.

It's time for Iraq's leaders to seize the opportunity for democracy in Iraq that our troops are sacrificing every day to create. If Iraq's leaders can't move past their infighting and endless delays to form a new government by May 15, we should immediately withdraw all of our troops. If they meet the May 15 deadline, we'll bring America's combat troops home by the end of the year and put the future of democracy in Iraq where it belongs -- in the hands of the Iraqi people.

The clarity and precision of our plan stand in sharp contrast to the aimless approach of the architects of this war -- Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld. All across America, people are strongly dissenting from the Bush administration's "stay for as long as it takes" policy -- and, just as important, standing up to the administration's attempts to vilify and question the patriotism of those who dare to speak out.

Decades ago I stood up to the Nixon administration and spoke out for a change of course in Vietnam. Four days from now, I will be delivering a speech at Boston's Faneuil Hall on the critically important topic of war and dissent. It's time to remind America that, when a stubborn president has America headed profoundly in the wrong direction, only citizen action can change our country's course.

The fight is just beginning. I recognize the importance of the United States Senate as an institution that can help change America's course. And I know that we can't force George W. Bush to confront reality in Iraq until we force the Senate to do the same.

Sign our Out of Iraq in 2006 petition now.

I will be acting in the Senate to bring change beginning when the current congressional recess ends on Monday. And I will be needing your help to move the Senate to action.

Working together, we can make the next 10 days an important turning point on Iraq -- and we can build momentum as our May 15 deadline approaches. You can help right now in three important ways. First, sign the Out of Iraq in 2006 petition. Second, forward this email to as many people as possible. And third, pay special attention to your email over the next 10 days.

Events could move quickly -- and you may need to act in a matter of hours.

Sincerely,

John Kerry

P.S. Some of America's most respected retired generals have called on Donald Rumsfeld to resign. We've long ago demanded the Secretary of Defense's resignation. Clearly, if President Bush acted with the decisiveness this moment demands, America could have a new Secretary of Defense in place by our May 15 deadline. And that would add much-needed impetus to the drive to successfully end America's military engagement in Iraq.

How very cloak and dagger. :loveya:

2. I posted in DU-P
but as per usual, all the adamantly anti-war people are ignoring it. Strange, they get a high profile Senator willing to lead this and they decide he's not pure enough, so they wait for ... all the other people willing to devote their name, energy and prestigue to this.

It's quickly sinking.

I am SO glad we're coming to Massachusetts for Saturday.

3. I'm really looking forward to meeting you.
There's a thread on the Carpetbagger Report this morning where everyone is lining up behind Gore. I haven't posted because I don't want to say anything negative about him, but let's just say I'm a lot less enthused than the others there.

I wonder if this means that the official netroots forgiveness period is 5 1/2 years? I don't want to tear Gore down, but on the other hand I'm gritting my teeth at his newly discovered sainthood.

4. Not everyone is lining up behind Gore
IT is part of the uncertainity of the off years. Remember, there are people who were with Kerry in 04 who are still there. They worked for Gore in 2000, then moved on and are now with him

6. Oh, I know - I just meant that
the people responding to that particular post were lining up behind Gore. That's all. I was surprised at the unanimity.

8. I also suspect it's because he is not running
preversely, if he actually started a run, made speeches, took positions etc things would change. Gore could not run as hot as his recent speeches. Dean was too angry and Gore, if anything, has been more intense. Changing to projecting a positive message, will seem to the angry netroots like going back to the "old" Gore. Then they will see that he is a pretty centrist Democrat. So, I would predict that within months, we would hear complaints about his "handlers".

Kerry has to be careful too, but his personality is such that even when red hot angry (as he was with Allard) he still sounds rational, focused and in control.

9. I'm excited about meeting all of you too
I'm really glad that we decided to go - even though we may not get in - it will be historic and incredible to be there when Kerry tries to push this forward. It will also be great to meet everyone.

Kerry Hits Nail on Head
By Marjorie Cohn t r u t h o u t | Perspective

Snip...

John Kerry cut to the heart of the matter when he said during Thursday’s debate with George W. Bush that, "a critical component of success in Iraq is being able to convince the Iraqis and the Arab world that the United States doesn’t have long-term designs on it." Kerry cited the U.S. construction of 14 military bases in Iraq that are said to have "a rather permanent concept to them."

Building these bases belies Bush’s protestations that he has "no ambitions of empire."

Snip...

Yes, as Kerry said, Bush made "a colossal error of judgment" when he invaded Iraq. "I will make a flat statement," Kerry declared during the debate. "The United States of America has no long-term designs on staying in Iraq." With that promise, John Kerry turned the policy of Team Bush on its head. Kerry was also right on when, responding to Bush’s debate mantra that Kerry sends mixed messages, the Senator said: "You talk about mixed messages. We’re telling other people, ‘You can’t have nuclear weapons,’ but we’re pursuing a new nuclear weapon that we might even contemplate using."

Here is the exact quote from the debate:

I will make a flat statement: The United States of America has no long-term designs on staying in Iraq.

And our goal in my administration would be to get all of the troops out of there with a minimal amount you need for training and logistics as we do in some other countries in the world after a war to be able to sustain the peace.

7. Posted at Kerry's
Senate site:

April 22nd Faneuil Hall
At 10:30 AM Saturday morning on April 22nd, I will be speaking at Faneuil Hall, and I hope you and your family can join me for a discussion of what is happening to our democracy when dissent - the right of patriotic people to speak out - is under assault.

This is a chance for me to put into context some things I have been thinking about and which have been important to me all my years in public life. There is no better group of people to share them with than loyal friends who have been there with me and my family every step of the way for decades, every time we have needed your help and support.

Massachusetts has a proud tradition of gathering at Faneuil Hall to speak out about freedom and democracy - a tradition as old as our country.

Saturday, April 22nd, I hope to continue that tradition with you in a very personal discussion about the meaning and responsibility of freedom and the enormous challenges our country faces as our soldiers are fighting and dying in a war that has gone off course, with dissent and debate stifled here at home.

This is a critical moment -- a moment that requires each of us to speak out in order to put the country we love back on course.

I hope Saturday April 22nd at Faneuil Hall will be another one of those special moments when we all come together for an important discussion. Thank you for RSVPing today and I look forward to seeing you Saturday.

Sincerely,

John Kerry

P.S. As you know, space can be very limited at Faneuil Hall. Please call as soon you can for Saturday.

RSVP 617 565 8262.

RSPV does not guarantee a seat. First come, first serve.

13. Graphic for Blogs
I made a graphic that fits in most Blog sidebars, since trying to shrink the one in JK's emails distorts it.

Feel free to save it and upload to your blog if you have one and link it to JK's petition - http://www.johnkerry.com/action/deadline/?sc=e.20060418

Or get creative and make your own... We need to let JK know we've got his back!
