And you aren't so smart yourself

Letter: Electing Bush was a huge mistake

Published: Mar 6, 2006

I am an unhappy Republican. More than that, I am an unhappy American. My greatest unhappiness is due to the continued and costly mistakes that our president makes that may jeopardize our very system of government, to say nothing of the damage being done to our economy

Snip...

The war has killed or maimed thousands of our young Americans and tens of thousands of Iraqi men, women and children (they’re people, too). It has cost us hundreds of billions of dollars, and no one can even guess what the total cost will be in dollars and human lives. He’s spending money like the proverbial drunken sailor, creating deficits our children and grandchildren will never be able to pay. Our international balance of payments has grown to unheard-of levels. He never vetoes a bill, tolerates massive pork in appropriation bills. In short, he is making a mockery of what we once thought of as the Republican Party. I’m now afraid our dollar is in serious jeopardy.

I voted for him when he was first elected. I never thought he was very smart, but I thought he would surround himself with good people, listen to them and make god decisions. I was wrong; he listened only to those who said what he wanted to hear. I never repeated that voting mistake again. I simply DIDN’T VOTE. I couldn’t vote for Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.; we needed better than either of them.

God has certainly blessed America. But I’m not willing to bet he’ll keep bailing us out when we make such huge mistakes as we did in picking our current president.

Edward J. Steimel, former president
Louisiana Association of Business and Industry
Baton Rouge

How does anyone with any sense compare Kerry, one of the smartest (intelligence and common sense) men around, to someone who is dumber than a doorknob (litterally)?

Question on edit: Who voted for Bush?

1. yeah
You would think that someone disappointed with the first * term would at least make the effort to find out about the challenger. No excuse for not knowing who Kerry was, even with our problematic media. If I could do it, so could anyone else with a TV or internet access.

I learned about JK by watching primary debates, and then went to johnkerry.com for more. Anyone could have done it. No excuses. Even people without internet or cable could have watched the prime-time, broadcast network-sponsored debates. All that was needed was an open mind. Sigh.

4. Also,
Louisiana Association of Business and Industry?

Isn't Kerry the man on small business and entrepreneurship.

What's Bush got to offer? A series of passed down enterprises that he ran into the ground. He also traded future Hall of Famer Sammy Sosa for a signed baseball (well it amounted to that).

6. Not many knew that
Another thing that needs to change about the Democratic Party strategy, we've simply got to stop focusing solely on large cities, which is what I saw happen with the Small Business for Kerry people. The needs are different for starters, but I didn't even see an effort to reach smaller towns in Oregon. I'm guessing it was the same in Louisiana, considering this guy doesn't sound like he had a clue.

2. Question from me
If you didn't think Bush was so smart why would you think he would use his brain to higher people who were smart?

5. people though he would be no worse than his dad.
In 2000, we had all of those "compassionate conservative" promises. I hate-hate-hated the results of that Selection--but I thought, well, how bad can it be to have another * term. Boy did we find out.

What people didn't know is how stubborn and ideological the son could be, and how contemptuous of facts and problem-solving using your brain. Meanwhile, *'s gut has gotten a workout instead. And I get the impression that people are afraid to tell him what he doesn't want to hear.

But to vote for him a second time is absolute lunacy. No way he would change the second time around.

7. This guy still drinks the kool aid- just not the Bush flavor.
Consider where he comes from and what he most likely reads in the papers. It is a shame, perhaps he can be convinced that it is ok to have an informed opinion differing from that of other people he lives around.

8. Okay, we are getting them back. This letter proves it.
We are obviously getting them back, one brain cell at a time. This guy's first brain cell has come to it's senses and he is rejecting Bush. That's probably enough work for one day. The next brain cell, the 'Vote Dem' brain cell is next. Then we go for more.

Patience, people, patience.

I like that as a slogan btw, The Democratic Party: Bringing America to it's senses, one brain cell at a time.

9. I'm seeing
a pattern:

Thursday, March 9
By Times-Herald readers

Changed my mind on Bush
I voted for George W. Bush for president, both times. In 2000, I believed he would reverse the great damage inflicted on Americans by the Clinton regime and other regimes before Clinton. That was the G.W. Bush promise that I recall. Having a conservative majority in the House and Senate, he had the ball; all he needed to do was run with it. What's wrong with him?

Again, in 2004, I voted for him because he was the lesser of two evils. John Kerry was not an option, even still.

John Kerry's name is in every RW rag. It's a concerted effort. I've been doing searches all this time and have seen nothing like intensity I've seen since the week started.

11. Pattern huh, I can understand this.Kerry is still appealing as a
Presidential candidate and they have some concerns that he may actually get some people in their party to take a second look at him, based on his performance in the last election and what has come to pass since, regarding Bush's performance. We will never get their hardcore base, but reasonable thinking moderate Republican's may have some interest in Kerry. They want to shore up Bush, so what are they left with, but to put down Kerry as being worse or equal to Bush. This does beg the question though, of how could they possible form that opinion of Kerry, when Kerry hasn't been given the opportunity to prove himself yet. Bush has.
