Kerry Raises Quick Cash for 3 Vets
Kerry Raises Quick Cash for 3 Vets
March 2nd, 2006 @ 1:36 pm

Way to go John Kerry… The WaPo’s The Fix Blog reports that John Kerry’s appeal yesterday to raise campaign funds for 3 of the Fighting Dems netted “roughly $250,000 for the three candidates in the first 24 hours.”

The prospect of a second presidential bid for John Kerry may be mocked by many Democratic party insiders, but Kerry’s fundraising ability — especially over the Internet — continues to keep him viable on the national scene.

The most recent example is an e-mail Kerry sent from his Keeping America’s Promise PAC asking donors to contribute to three Iraq war veterans running for Congress as Democrats: Tammy Duckworth in Illinois’s 6th District, Patrick Murphy in Pennsylvania’s 8th District and Joe Sestak in Pennsylvania’s 7th District. (Click here to read Post reporter Peter Slevin’s terrific profile of Duckworth.)

The Kerry appeal raised roughly $250,000 for the three candidates in the first 24 hours, according to Kerry insiders. That total includes approximately $100,000 for Duckworth, and $65,000 each for Murphy and Sestak. (The remaining $20,000 or so was contributed to other candidates.) The Massachusetts senator has now raised better than $1 million online in the last six months, according to calculations made by his aides.

1. Not bad for an irrelevant candidate that attracts nobody!
:sarcasm:

2. Funny that the former nominee may honestly be able to run as an outsider

or more appropriately an inside outsider who has been able to see what happens inside, but who as stayed true to himself rather than becoming one of the club. Who better to run as a reformer? (Are mavericks really everybodies friend in any group? )

That is really pretty impressive.

3. Woo-hoo!
I also find it very interesting that Duckworth attracted so much more than the others, when by looking at DU and dkos you'd think she wasn't very popular. Hmmm....

4. Wow! No wonder there was that post a while ago

on another board that demanded that Sen. Kerry turn his e-mail list over to the DNC. (Fat chance. They should use Demzilla anyway.)

This is very impressive work. I still think there are a lot of veterans on that list and responded to an appeal for 'one of our own.'

6. I don't think the list in the DNCs hands would have the same result
Kerry's appeals are always full of information and in these cases are recommendations that he explains.

7. Oh I agree.
The thing I like about his letters (and now his posts on DKos and, we hope, someday, DU) is that there is a lot of the personal in them. They read like, well, letters and have some warmth to them. I like that.

8. I wonder how many of the other politicians
write their fund raising letters. I think the fact that Kerry is someone who has written personal letters from the time he was a 10 year old school boy and the fact that he is a very good writer makes it easier for him to write these. Also, I think that he saw in 2004 that people wanted him to reach out to them - but the letters show a respect for the the recipients and appeal to their intelligence.

10. I saw that.
I didn't realize that Duckworth was originally pushed by Durbin and Obama (not Rahm and DCCC). I wonder what they think of Cegelis, and did they try to give her an alternative opportunity to make peace? I sure hope they did, but if so obviously she turned it down. It's too bad, because after reading more on Duckworth, I think she's a great candidate; and clearly Cegelis is too.

Now that I know more, I think I understand why JK endorsed her, and it really isn't a parallel to what happened here in PA, so I feel much better about it.

11. Sounds like they have a lively primary
I hope they do get a lot of publicity for this and a chance to 'air the issues.' That is usally a good thing.

5. I am happy to see this. I will continue to give to Senator Kerry- he
is the only one I will give to now that it is apparent the DLC and Hillary are out to marginalize him.
