Real Hardball

by John Kerry
Fri Jan 20, 2006 at 03:52:31 PM PDT

There's something that doesn't sit right with me when, on the day Osama Bin Laden resurfaced in a disturbing audio tape, cable television ends up in a game of name calling as a war protester is compared to Osama Bin Laden.

That's reason to be outraged - but even more outrageous is the fact that in a flurry of sound bites what was lost was a real discussion of the fact that more than four years after the devastating attacks of 9/11, more than four years after George Bush boasted we wanted Osama "dead or alive," more than a year after Osama Bin Laden showed his hateful face in yet another video, this barbarian is still very much alive and boasting of additional attacks against the United States.

John Kerry's diary :: ::
Here's what I'd like to see debated on Hardball.

President Bush's mouthpiece Scott McClellan can claim this administration puts terrorists out of business, but yesterday's tape reminds us that instead of being out of business, Osama is still out there.

If this administration had followed through on the opportunity to capture Osama Bin Laden at Tora Bora in 2001, the world would be a better place with Osama Bin Laden brought to justice -- and we wouldn't be having this discussion today.

And here's what the media should insist we discuss.

President Bush and his defenders continue to claim that Osama Bin Laden didn't escape at Tora Bora. But Gary Bernstein's book Jawbreaker documents what I said early in 2002 and during my debates with George Bush: that because Donald Rumsfeld's Pentagon didn't use American troops to do the job and instead outsourced the job of killing the world's #1 terrorist to Afghan warlords, this cold blooded killer got away.

So what's the truth? There's a question that the full force of cable television should demand be answered. Press accounts over the last month have raised new concerns about the reliance on Afghan forces at Tora Bora in 2001. One account cited a Department of Defense document said to summarize the case against a suspected al Qaeda militant. The militant was believed to have helped Osama bin Laden escape from Tora Bora. More recently, August Hanning, the head of German intelligence, has said bin Laden bribed Afghan forces at Tora Bora to make his escape.

-snip-
Isn't it time we had the truth? Yes or no, did Osama Bin Laden escape from Tora Bora in 2001?

Here's a subject suited for true hard ball, on Hardball: four years of failure - enough is enough - why hasn't Osama Bin Laden been captured or killed, and how will he be destroyed before he next appears on tape to spread his disgusting message?

That discussion -- rather than criticizing American citizens who exercise their right to free speech and express dissenting opinions - is the discussion that America needs. That would be the kind of debate on Hardball to which we should all tune in.

John Kerry

32. Congratulations to all of you
He really did a nice job and they seem impressed that he came over there. It will be interesting to see if they are less negative and if he continues to do this. It always been weird because some times, like when there was that very long thread when he went to the funeral, that people stepped back and said that he was a very good decent intelligent man. It makes sense as (other than Feingold) none of the other candidates are close to as liberal as he is.

Congratulations to all of you - and congratualtions to him for listening!

10. It's great news...
... but it seems to make the Kossacks think that they're more important than they are. They think their shrieking finally got his attention, but it was ALL US - HIS TRUE SUPPORTERS - URGING HIM TO POST AT DKOS TO COUNTER THE COMPLETE SPIN AND LIES FROM MARKOS.

BTW, I'm convinced the Kos compliment was only because he felt sheepish that Kerry actually wants to post there. Maybe knowing that Kerry is watching will make him STFU - knowing that he could at any time be called to task by Kerry for any lies he wants to spew.

*feels smug*

Kerry could have done. I am amazed at all the positive responses to his diary. He entered the Lion's Den, and charmed them all into a bunch of pussycats. If he makes a somewhat regular appearance over there, and maybe even here at some point, the bloggers will feel like he hasn't forgotten or abandoned them. He will sway a lot of opinions that way. Good on him, I say :toast:

That he is reading the comments.

Some were complaining that he wasn't replying to comments. He did the smart thing, instead of trying to keep up with the comments - which are flying way fast - he just updated the diary with a P.S.

Someone coached him well.

From the tone of the P.S. it had to be him writing it - even if he has a staffer working the keyboard, which is possible and quite all right!

45. Reading the later comments...
... MUCH more positive. This is fantastic - John needs to make a weekly diary there. He can and will change the hearts and minds of those who are good-intentioned Democrats who have nevertheless drank the Kos koolaid. Only the hardest-hearted Kossacks will remain hostile, and they will begin to look more and more hostile and trollish the more goodwill builds for Kerry.

The tide is slowly is slowly turning... :loveya:... and we helped it in the turning. :toast: TO SENATOR JOHN KERRY AND THE KERRYCRATS!

46. OMG this comment....
Quite a surprise (4.00 / 3)

Senator Kerry, it's with great respect that I welcome you here. To be honest, I didn't think you'd ever make it over here because of Kos's well known dislike for you and your campaign. Like I said, quite the surprise, and a great one at that.

On a more personal note, living down here in the reddest of states, Texas, I switched parties because of your nomination in the primaries. Imagine the shock of my family and friends when I hit them with the news that indeed, I would be voting for you instead of Mr. Bush. My parents, though, great people that they are(and stuanch Republicans) welcomed the opportunity to debate ideas and whatnot. My grandparents on the other hand... They still can't believe I'd go against the preachings of Rush Limbaugh! Because of you, I'll forever remain a Democrat and you have profoundly affected my life. I switched majors half-swing in college, from business to political science, read your biography in one 4 and a half hour flight to DC, and anxiously await the arrival of my new car so I can slap my "John Kerry 2008" bumper sticker on it, much to the chagrin of my friends. :)

I watched your acceptance speech at the DNC convention from my hospital bed and gladly told all the nurses and doctors who came in during that time that I was voting for you. Back in April of 2005, I delayed admission back into the hospital (I have Cystic Fibrosis) by two days so I could attend your Kids HealthCare tour in Austin, Tx. I took over 25 pictures and bragged to everyone how open, cordial, jovial and personable you were. Nothing like the harsh caricature constantly blared on TV and even the conservative friend I convinced to go with me came away very impressed with you.

Lastly, my father(The staunch Republican) has called your Senate office numerous times thanking you for your service, and thanking you for providing his son with "something to do" while in the hospital besides going insane during the usual 14-21 day stays, i.e. keeping tabs on you, the state of politics. He often says as he drops off a number of political and history books to keep me busy, "I don't think John Kerry realizes what he has done!" Thank you and your office for treating him with respect in kind. Finally, good luck in all future endeavors and I hope I'll be able to vote for you again in the 2008 general election!

This about makes me have tears in my eyes. God bless you, Inconspicuous, and God bless you, John Kerry.

I have limited experience on that site. I recommended his diary - is there a way to rate it?

I am so happy to see him there, and really, quite impressed with the number of positive responses he's getting... I had no idea so many Kerry lovers were hiding over there.

I hope he gets to see my comment. I'm waaaay down in the 600's.

57. You can only rate
comments. That's what they call the "tip jar" - a diarist has to post a comment to their own diary in order to get rated. So unless JK posts a comment you can't rate him.

But I can just picture him drinking this in with a huge grin on his face. It makes me soooooooooo happy!

These people that have been angry over the election and have been
displacing their anger towards Kerry, are finally going to have
an outlet.

And Kerry needs to hear it. If he's going to win in 2008, he needs to
know what it's going to take to win back the extreme left.

Oh - that gave me an idea.... I have a few people that need to
read KOS!

Anyone sending this out to the Kerrybashers they know?

102. A few things I noticed:
A lot of very positive posts.

The very few really negative ones, will never support Kerry, let me rephrase, will never admit to supporting Kerry in a post. This could be because they are really bitter, really don't like him or are not Democrats.

A few are hurling challenges, some unrealistic, at Kerry with ultimatums. I find this funny, since it seems they are desperate for leadership and appear to have no one else to call on. Doesn't that say they are counting on Kerry to be their leader because they don't see anyone else who fits the bill? Also seems that they believe Kerry is in a position of power to do something about it, not the weakened position some of these same posters claim as they contradict themselves within their posts. This is important because they also claim America needs the strongest leadership more than ever now to right the terrible wrongs and destroy the evil Bush empire.

Some are repeating the same old "where were you" and "why didn't you say" lines that clearly show they are not informed and need to get up to speed on all JK has been doing and saying for the past half decade---since Bush stole the first election.

Still, the overwhelming majority have a very positive tone.

Kerry rocks!

105. This response is right on
I have the ultimate respect for Senator Kerry. Of course, I do understand that it's fashionable these days to talk casually about the "obvious" tactical failures of the Kerry campaign. Mostly silly, of course.

Yes, Kerry is the ideal Democrat. He's smart. He's experienced. He's spent his life defending his nation -- on the political battlefield, and the real one. But he lost the election.

Therefore, most Democrats I read attack the result. They hate the result, so they hate the tactics -- or dismiss the man. I think that's a mistake.

Senator Kerry is my ideal presidential candidate. My ideal presidential candidate can wipe the floor, as Senator Kerry did, with a sitting president. As a joke. Everyone, even Democrats, looked away awkwardly as Bush embarassed himself in front of the entire world. There was, of couse, no question that Senator Kerry was better prepared for the Presidency of the United States of America.

Quality matters. Yes, results matter too, but for the voter who refuses to abdicate his principles, quality matters most; one wants the leader who will execute his office efficiently and fairly. Now, we're not getting that.

Stop shooting the messenger. Give Senator Kerry a break.

by RatIV on Sat Jan 21, 2006 at 04:30:17 AM PDT

This one speaks a lot too how many votes he really got from the other side. Stories like these just make me know in my gut that he did win.

Welcome Senator Kerry!

My Mother and sister both voted for you! As did I. Why is that remotely interesting? It was my mother's first vote for a Democrat for President in her more than fifty years of voting in Presidential elections. As lifelong, conservative Republicans in the heartland of America, both she and my sister were won over by your strong performance in the debates.

As conservative Catholics who are pro-life, they supported and agreed with your view that religion informs one's politics and helps to mold one's values but it also imposes a duty to make the world a better place ... to help the poor, to care for the ill and elderly, and to work for peace and justice.

Were they unique among their peers? No, because many of their friends also voted Democratic for the first time in many years in the Presidential Election. Unfortunately, the media has not reported much about how some conservative and pro-life Catholics jumped the aisle to vote for a fellow Catholic who shared their values.

I hope that in these trying and difficult times, you will lead the tough fight for justice and what is right. I wish you the best! You have our support!

P.S. - We all love Teresa! As professionals and businesswomen, my mother and sister were excited to have someone as outspoken and accomplished as Teresa representing them on the campaign trail!

109. Those are great! Thanks.
What's with the "Senator!" blah blah blah...suggestions, demands and political posturing in the form of ultimatums? Why can't they make their suggestions without all the "do this or forget my support" BS? How about doing it because it's right (although it first has to be realistic)?

I'm thrilled Kerry reached out directly, but it's not like all these comments can't be sent to him by letter, e-mail, fax and his Senate and PAC sites anytime. Are the critics afraid to give the impression they're hanging on? Almost 1,100 post later (many from supporters for sure), is there any doubt? Go ahead, hang on, it's the right thing to do. I'm sure JK would love to hear from as many people as possible.

132. I have been feeling something similar for a while now:
that people who are angry "at" Senator Kerry are really just angry that there aren't really any good alternatives to him. And I understand that, because wouldn't it be incredible if we had 20 Democratic leaders as skilled and principled and experienced and electable as he is? But we don't, and it's troubling. Of course, it's a lot less troubling for those of us who can open up to his ideas and who can admit that he really is an ideal leader for this country. :) So yes, I'm learning the same thing from your posts: angry Democrats, whether they like it or not, are admitting once again that the world needs John Kerry.

116. Remind the kos posters that there is a flag against King George - Gadsden
flag.

Don't Tread on Me = NO KING GEORGE!

117. This post is probably why.
Senator Kerry, a humble suggestion (none / 0)

Can you repost this diary, with a link to the original?

A thread with over 1,000 comments is nearly impossible for many users to open, let alone read through.

I'm thrilled your presence here has generated such a response! Let's not let the limitations of this medium cripple the discussion.

Thanks!

118. Why are you...
... doing this to me? I have work to do, and instead now I am again going through the posts at Kos! I already missed a vet appointment because of the first thread.

By the way, good that he is telling the Kos crows about the TV appearance tomorrow, the more eyes & ears the better. Also, I came across somewhere else that Obama will be on Meet the Press (might have been on this forum in which case I feel silly). Should be interesting also, ethics and the like...

119. The outpouring...
... of all the "thank you"s, "please speak truth to power", "can we count on you?", etc. is really moving, especially from a place where snappy criticism was the norm. I think it goes beyond the sense of being flattered that he wants to participate in the discussion. I am not sure how to interpret it... feeling abandoned and seeing that you actually are not? Expression of deep frustration, not knowing what to do and where to turn and clinging to somebody you trusted and thought you had lost? I don't know... but as I said, it is really touching, almost brought tears tears to my eyes....

120. Like a people who've been robbed of their last reasons to hope,
and now seeing that yes, there is someone listening. And some are certainly remembering the hope and vision Kerry gave all of us during the campaign. :) The reality of a Kerry who's tuning in to the blogosphere beats the "straw man" Kerry that so many of them like to attack and villify. Magically, he's become one of "us" instead of one of "them" to these guys.

Another hilarious factor: the realization that, "OMG, the prominent person I'm so anonymously and freely insulting is actually seeing what I wrote!"

By the way, has Kos weighed in since the first post where he verified that it was really JK? I really really don't want to have to read all those posts!

122. "Like a people who've been robbed...
...of their last reasons to hope, and now seeing that yes, there is someone listening". Well put.

I want to pull myself away from the thread and get to some much needed work, but I keep going through one post after another. And in case you did not see it, there are a couple of short "thank you" posts signed JK :-). He, or whoever is reading, reacted to the "please make this a dialog" comments.

I am sure the discussion will continue, with or without a JK diary, tomorrow after the ABC appearance.

Oh God, please, please, please, make it happen in 08!!!

PS: I don't think I saw othre posts by Kos.

124. no other posts from Kos
But I'm actually amused. (Aren't I mean?)

It's like watching someone dip their toe into the freezing water, not sure if they should slowly scoot into the pool or just take a dive in. I'm so sorry to be mean but...

I just really pray they're LISTENING to the comments. BECAUSE those are the people who matter and can make a difference on the ground. I hope the comments are not going into a lost cave of darkness never to be utilized or seen again. It's like the jkblog...so many darn good suggestions and it BROKE my heart to see them ignored while the pundants kept their lies.

I hope they learned.

133. yeah it is
It just goes to show: there are a few highly vocal Kerry-bashers out on the blogosphere, but there is a vast group secretly for him, or at least neutral. Which bodes very well for the future.

123. In case you guys missed it...
I don't know how to post a link to a specific post on DK, so here it is, typo an all

Thank you for the service you're providing (4.00 / 3)

by speaking out for veterans -- we need a lot more from people like you to put this on the front burner.

Of all the things I've thought most about over the last year since the election, what's most disgusting to me is how ignored and forgotten and discarded the people I fought for have been by Washington. I'd love to have a debate about whether patriotism is giving speeches about veterans and then having a 1.2 billion dollar hole in our veterans budget, or whether it's actually going out and providing for veterans who come home from a war with all kinds of scars from the battlefield, visible or invisible.

There's a lot more we need to do, but it will only happen if we raise hell about it and organize around it. I intoduced a Military Family's Bill of Rights as legislation in this Congress and I've been able -- piece meal -- to pass parts of it to do things like improve housing benefits and death benefits for military families. But talking about PTSD and funding treatment programs and counseling programs is something Washington remains pathetically incompetent at really getting done. It requires pressure -- real pressure -- to do it. Please follow what I'm doing on it, and what people like Rep Lane Evans and others are doing on it because we really need your voice on it. 2006 will be a moment of accountability on this issue if we make it so, and we can especially with so many Iraq War vets running as Democrats.

129. gv...a reminder, some of those people are trolls.
either leftie trolls or rightie trolls.

I learned on the jkblog to always counter their crap with educational facts in support of JK. Even though it's over there, you still have the right to just pop in a "thanks for that illuminating comment...(sarcasm)" BUT here are the real facts....

Fellow Veteran (4.00 / 21)

Senator, if you hang around here long enough you'll soon discover that a lot of the posters and diarists are vets, like you; many are Viet Nam vets, like you; and many more are the fathers, parents, brothers and sisters of vets. That doesn't make us exceptional or give us a more legitimate platform from which to speak; we're all citizens here. But it does, I think, boil our blood a bit more when we're painted as unpatriotic or not "supporting the troops" when we question the lunatic policies of this administration. You faced those chickenhawk attacks on a national level, and we've recently seen the same pit-bull tactics with Congressman Murtha. As Al Gore did the other day, it's time to reframe the conversation about patriotism and citizenship; it's not about yellow magnets on your car. It is about, in the beautifully Jeffersonian sense, educating citizens to understand and uphold the values inherent in the Constitution - and encouraging these same citizens to hold their elected leaders accountable when these values are violated. Which means welcoming dissent, not insulting the dissenter.
