More Kerry in Esquire
Edited on Sun Dec-18-05 06:27 PM by kerrygoddess
More John Kerry Tells Esquire What He’s Learned
December 18th, 2005

I can’t resist, now that I have also read the Esquire interview with John Kerry, that Ron posted about last night, sharing a little more from the interview…

Last summer I drove across the country with some friends. There was no plan and there were no trappings. We were in blue jeans and shirts, driving all night in my Ford F-150 truck, trading off behind the wheel, telling stories. Like Jack Kerouac. It was fantastic. We went through lush farm-land in Pennsylvannia and cattle country in Texas. We walked the battlefield at Little Bighorn. Wyoming. Colorade. New Mexico. We dropped into little diners at odd hours and people were freaked. “What are you doing here?”

My definition of patriotism is to defend your country with the truth, no matter the consequences.

One person I can have lunch with? My appetite is too enormous. Can I get three? Four? Abraham Lincoln. Teddy Roosevelt. Winston Churchill. How about this? Could I spend some time on the road in Galilee with Jesus? I’d like to be present at a few miracles.

We’ve got to have an honest conversation about education in this country.

Teresa is a total contradiction to the public perception. If I had to describe her in one word? Nurturing.

Ok, I must confess! Politics aside: I have a major crush Senator Kerry. He's the BOMB. I've gone to listen to him speak and let me tell you: he looks SO much better in person. The media reports that John Kerry lacks charisma because he is so serious. Let me tell you: serious is seriously sexy. This man oozes Testosterone with a capital "T." John Kerry embodies that odd mixture of intense presence and nobility that you find in some of the old time movie stars. His eyes burn with both a kindness and a cold fire that marks both the man's compassion and his steel and determination. Yet, sometimes, when he smiles you can see the boyish spirit peek out from beneath the serious senator. The combination is devastating. John Kerry is my Lovemark. I absolutely adore the sexy senator.

Actually my best friend, Rachel, who lives in the same town as I do, is the one who started that Lovemark.

Before the election, that site got SO TOXIC and the Kerry haters invaded that page so many times, and it got SO ugly, that I stopped going. I haven't gone back since. I just can't do it.

But yeah, Lana is right. He's a god.

There are a the page has only positive post, including this most recent one:

I'm proud I voted for John Kerry. John Kerry is a true patriot and a true hero. He is a natural leader because he listens and because he speaks the truth. Again and again, over this past year, the things Senator Kerry told us and the things he warned us about have been proven true. And he hasn't abandoned us. He's right there on every issue, holding the Administration's feet to the fire. You can't keep a good man down and you can't keep the truth from being told. John Kerry is our true leader. I reject the pretender who holds our White House. John Kerry is my President.

Jim, United States - 5 December 2005

Hey, cheer up and remember how "big" a man Kerry is (I've been collecting photos, again)

42. I loved the stort of how they met too
Hindsight being 20/20, it would have been such a good idea to have had someone who was there (Senator Lautenberg ?) tell the story in an ad. It has so many things that were counter to the Republican myths.
- Teresa was there because Bush I picked her because of her work
- John was there because he's been there for all the conferences
- They both went to church
- Teresa helped the US as a translator
- It's just a very cute story that personalizes both of them. (I think Lautenberg was the one who made the cute comment about 2 Americans speaking French were clearly flirting. - (Even though the Republicans don't like French, the idea that French is a romantic language exits.)

43. Reading that I was disappointed Stern was on the cover instead of Kerry
but in reality it probably means more people may read it who picked it up to read about Stern. So, it may be less preaching to the choir. It is nice that he is getting this type of attention more than one year later or 2 years out.

The interesting thing is that I would guess this will reach more men. It really seems as though the people from 2004 who are most adamantly still pro-Kerry (to the exclusion of ANY other candidate) are women. So, this is interesting.

January is usually a slow month for magazine sales, and Kerry has been very visible lately and a lot of people are tuned into him right now. The wingnuts might even picked it up for their own sordid purposes.

They'll pick it up because Howard's on the cover, but they're certain to stop and read about Sen Kerry when they see that awesome pic of him.
I have a dentist appt on Thu. Think I'll pick up another copy.

52. I looked at a copy at the library yesterday. I was surprised they
already had it. I just loved that interview, and that picture just makes him look really tall!! And I have to admit, I read the Stern interview, too, which I recommend you read. He totally went after the * administration on several subjects and the religious right, too. He's been fined a ton of money from the FCC, especially under *, and he just talked about how dirty the * WH plays it, exposing Plame, and then ends with "and they think I'm dirty?". But going back to JK, I wish the interview was longer. It was like more, more, give me more.

was telling his audience during the election not to vote for Bush, but Kerry. The problem may have been though that his audience is about 14 years old.

56. Ah, actually you would be surprised who listens to Stern
I have a friend who is female, white, fairly conservative and she loved to listen to Stern when she was in a market that played him. She said he was broadcasting when the planes hit the towers on 9/11, and she said he was unbelievably good. He switched immediately into reporting mode and did a fantastic job. Unfortunately, Stern isn't on around here (plus she has kids now), and she voted for *. I wonder if she was still a Stern listener if she would have voted differently . . .

Another listener is Jeff Jarvis of buzzmachine.com. I don't read him anymore because I think he caters to the Right too much (he did endorse Kerry, though), but usually his best posts were in defense of Stern and how the FCC so unfairly singled him out. Jarvis filed a FOIA, and discovered that a lot of times, the complaints sent to the FCC originate from those dumb conservative groups (Parent Research Council) who merely print off letters over and over, making it look like a lot of people are complaining when it's usually about 3 people. Stern called into a radio show and told off Michael Powell (like how did you get your job? Through your Dad?) that was just awesome.

Yeah, I know technically Stern is "demeaning" to women, but he's only being honest to what goes though most guys' heads, but who stay quiet. And my friend says that if you listen to his whole show he's about more than the, er, T & A.

Can't say I blame her.

69. I finally found a copy
I had to go to the drugstore today, and saw Howard Stern's mug staring out at me from the magazine rack. So I finally got my copy. I wish the interview had been longer. But what there was of it was good. I didn't care much for the picture. I don't think it showed him in his best light. He looked kind of the like the Hasbro Politician Action Figure, suit and all. I wish they had used a pic of him in his pickup truck, maybe in a leather jacket and jeans.

68. I looked EVERYWHERE -- finally got the last copy at the Harvard Coop
I called last night and the person I spoke to put it aside for me. Isn't it weird that the December issue is still hanging around, but we all keep running into "last copies" of the January one? Maybe it's just the vagaries of ordering procedure and they'll soon get more in stores.

Love the interview!!!! A lot! The picture is very strange, though I like it. He kind of looks like an action figure, the way he's standing in a sort of half-artificial, half-spontaneous pose!

I love the description of the trip -- he sounds so excited about the idea of getting to do something so informal. I bet they had a BLAST. I also remember hearing that he was doing some Lewis and Clark sightseeing on that trip because he is a Lewis and Clark "nerd" -- the man just keeps getting more enchanting the more I learn about him!

70. A question: Couldn't someone probably scan it and send it to me...
... in an email? I still can't get the mag here and it's not necessary to send me a copy because it's expensive to do so. But a scan of the interview sent through email would be very much appreciated. If someone of you would be so kind to do this for me, please PM me and I'll give you my email address. Thanks!

71. going out today again to look for this
couldn't find it last time. hopefully it means it's because they are selling out the magazines, most likely due to Stern on the cover. but that's good if it gets those previously not supportive or neutral about Kerry to see the section on him.

72. I think I'm the last on the Kerry block to find it but, I FINALLY DID!
:bounce: It was great, just wish it were a longer interview. I hope he does a lot more of this kind of thing in the coming years just to stay fresh in the minds of folks who aren't necessarily political junkies. (And to feed the needs of those of us who are JK junkies. We have LOTS of needs.) I have to be honest though, I'm not really diggin' the photo.

73. i think it being shorter helps appeal to the ones not already fans
a long interview is something they might have skipped over. but they would read something shorter.

as for the pic, now i'm even more interested in seeing it.

76. Try a bookstore that has a decent magazine selection
I believe there's a B&N in your town, if I'm not mistaken. Of course, being right before the gift-giving holidays, it will probably be mobbed this weekend.

77. Finally got it
after my husband went to four stores trying to find it, B7N didn't have it so when I went to the mall I tried Waldens and sure enough there it was.

I like the picture because it shows all 6'4" of him, odd setting though.

I'm one happy Kerrycrat tonight, I thought I would never find it, last year I never got a copy of the Rollingstone with the great article init, I was bound and determined not to miss out again.

I will look more in earnest next week. I checked a Borders near me and they still had the Dec. issue. I wish the pic was posted somewhere, I am intrigued by the description of it here.

79. I didn't like the photo because the lighting was so odd
We all know that Senator Kerry is an incredibly gorgeous man, but IMO lighting can make or break how good he looks in a photo. I suppose this shot was supposed to be artistic, but I would have loved to have seen a shot of JK more like the one of Salman Rushdie (also in the magazine). You're right though Fedup, the photo does show all 6'4" of him - that I liked! :)

i didn't really have a problem with the picture but it was different from what i was expecting. but then i realized it was a men's magazine.

didn't see Rushdie but i'm going to go back tomorrow and try to buy it.

81. Hey, Fedup, it was at the B&N by the Mall, but not in the main section
It was in those stand alones of magazines. This was Wednesday, and there plenty. I saw they had a lot at Waldenbooks, too. I guess I'm just saying they were pretty plentiful on Wednesday.

82. A definite 'will read.' Thanks. Though I still am tempted to say...
If JK's definition of 'patriotism' is "to defend your country with the truth, no matter the consequences"...then he needs to follow his words with action...and finally admit the election WAS stolen. Sorry, but I don't "buy" that 'no smoking gun' alibi. Nope. Sorry.

Though I DO love the quote...and the 'Man' who TRULY should be our Prez NOW.

83. "Stolen" and "lie" are words I don't expect him to use.
But if you heard the AAR interview today on Politically Direct, he came out pretty strongly saying there were problems that need to be resolved. Also he came out strongly on Ed Schultz saying that the machines have been shown to be hackable and that needs to be fixed.

I think it's good politics that he stay away from the inflammatory terms, myself.

84. Finally. I got a copy.
My grocery store finally got the January issue in. It was well worth the wait. Three of my favorite men were in it. Jeff Gordon, John Kerry and Opie Taylor. That photo was awesome. I couldn't stop looking at it. Did anyone read the Arianna Huffington interview? She had a Kerry comment in it. I sure would love to know what she meant." When the old John Kerry put down the Young John Kerry on Meet the Press, he disowned his better self."

85. I don't think he did put down the young John Kerry
Edited on Thu Dec-29-05 09:20 AM by karynnj
He did say that the way that he said somethings was different than how he would say them now (when he was 60). That they were over the top and that he regretted that some people were hurt by the way he said it. But it was very clear that he was proud that he stood up.

Listening to how he answered the torture question at Georgetown - where he took pains to put it in context while he condemned it might be what he meant. I think Huffington preferred the raw anguish and anger of the 1971 Kerry. In the op-ed Kerry wrote in support of Bob Kerrey - he had become more explicitly forgiving toward the soldiers, explaining the nightmare of confusion they were in while still condemning policies that led to atrocities. Even in his 1971 speech he talked about soldiers tormented because they did what was asked of them - and some policies were morally wrong.

Kerry, used the anger he felt to speak out and to work for change. He was never the anti-war action figure Huffington apparently wanted him to remain. (Also, as she was a RW columnist in the 80s, I wonder what she said or thought about Kerry in the 70s - if she even knew of him. She has no room to speak about staying true to convictions of youth.)

I liked the answer he gave Press to the inevitable question of whether he asks himself "How to you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake" - that he does TO STAY TRUE TO HIMSELF, but that Iraq is not VN ... He clearly hasn't rejected who he was.

86. Excellent points!
I thought about this during Huffington's campaign. What a shift! And it just shows the hypocrisy of people who prefer to accuse others by distorting reality and twisting the truth.
