18. vinessa, I used to be really afraid to fly too

but I've gotten used to it. It all has to do with feeling out of control. Really when you drive your car you are more in danger, but since you are at the wheel you have a sense of control and safety.

I finally realized that once I get on a plane, I am giving up control of what happens to me. So the time to worry is before that point. Once I am on the plane, the best thing to do is to not think about it. I read a book and try to take my mind off the fact that I am taking off or landing, or am in turbulence in the air! (Those planes are built to take much more than the worst shaking that any turbulence can cause.)

With repeated experiences of doing that and have nothing bad happen as a result of refusing to worry, I have a less fearful attitude toward getting on a plane.

It's true that thousands of planes take off and land every day in this world, and only rarely does anything go wrong. So it helps to think about that, too.

You nailed it on the head with being out of control. I can't stand it. I've learned to get past some of it, it was crippling my life. Honestly I'm 36 years old, and have only had a driver's license for 3 years. Somehow, I can't get logic to work on my nervous system about flying. I went to San Francisco as a kid, didn't bother me a bit (they even had a 5.9 earthquake in honor of my visit:) ), and I wasn't expecting the panic when I flew at 19. I even start getting a panic attack when I see sky divers on t.v. I dunno, maybe it's time for hypnosis or something.

I think they may have had problems in the lounge or something, I didn't think it was an issue here because a)it's pretty harmless (well, most of it is) and b) pretty much everyone that frequents this forum know who kinks and which threads they are, so it's not like people will just stumble onto porn, or anything. Was not so much the poster saying they didn't agree with it or it offended them (can't remember exactly how they put it) but the fact that they had to insult people while they did it.:grr: And as you can see from the posts above from last night we all had already started to tone it down. I hardly ever go into the lounge. Is this a carry over thing? I think that sometimes the randy threads go to a place that I cannot follow, but I think the idea of having some fun is vital. I was watching C-Span back in December and they had Molly Ivins on. She made a point of saying that Democrats have to learn to loosen up and have some fun. Especially liberal Democrats. We face such long high odds that unless we learn to lighten up a little bit, we will all burnout. I concur. And it is harmless. But we don't really want to be freeper laughingstocks either. There has to be a solution.

BTW, only Democrats would have this as a dilemma. Rethugs would immediately have their daughters shipped off to reprogramming camps. (How to vacuum in pearls. How to primly applaud when Fearless Leaders give speeches. How to control your 'urges' when you don't have that Cheney pic around to dampen you down. And so forth.)

I just object to the strong language she chose. IMO, I don't see how one could "not realize" that people might get offended by having their posts called "mindless drivel."
