Coverage of Mass gay marriage
Headline I just ran into on line:

MASS DEMS EMBRACE HOMO WEDS IN PLATFORM
http://www.michnews.com/artman/publish/article_8156.shtml

With coverage like this, it is hard to argue that Kerry deserves the criticism he received for calling the plank a mistake. It is fair to disagree with Kerry over this, but you at least have to grant Kerry that it was a reasonable opinion to express.

Unfortunatley sites like Kos start with the premise that Kerry is wrong and work backwards to come up with reasons why. It is a true Ditto Head mentality there.

They could just as easily have stressed the point that Kerry stated he would not interfere with the pro-gay marriage plank despite his personal beliefs.

1. The Michigan thing is repulsive - From the title on
Their treatment of Kerry is strange and ugly, which is no surprise - but they do at least quote him accurately. Their definition of "waffling" is special - he didn't change, but apparently not being black or white (gay marriage, nothing) is waffling now?

Any hope that someone who is not a true believer in this garbage may see Kerry as less threatening because he's the moderate here?

2. Not the readers of this

The fanatics who read this stuff don't see a difference between civil unions and gay marriage.

However there are many people who voted against gay marriage who were willing to accept civil unions so Kerry could come off as the compromise candidate here. This won't be reflected on line where people are more polarized, but general voters might be more accepting of Kerry's position.
