Anyone watching C-span 2 - Stevens is on - upset that Kerry made an ethics
Edited on Wed Mar-16-05 11:57 AM by Pirate Smile
complaint or something about him personally. He doesn't get why Kerry singled him out - from Steven's fit yesterday I don't know why he would be surprised.

He mumbled something about how he may take a personal point of privilege or something. I'm not really clear on what the hell he is talking about.

Did anyone else hear this or know what he was talking about?

He also said he was personally upset that Senator Cantwell would even offer this Amendment. Excuse me???

I did finally see why he is personally so freaked out -

"The refuge was established in 1960 and expanded in 1980, under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, which included a provision to study the potential oil and gas resources in one small slice of ANWR known as the Arctic coastal plain.

"You know, 24 years I've argued to get Congress to keep its word made to us. . . . They assured us we could explore in that area," Stevens said. Based on that compact, he had allowed Congress to withdraw 100 million acres of Alaska land from state and local use, turning it over to the federal government.

His constituents condemned what they saw as a traitorous act. The senator has kept one "Come home Ted" local newspaper ad in his wallet for all these years, "to remind me what can happen when people really disagree with you."

But Stevens's dream may soon be realized, if Republicans can beat back a Democrat-led effort to strip the ANWR provision during this week's budget debate on the Senate floor. "

edit to add a lovely photo of Stevens in his Hulk tie today.

particularly personally because it's about his state. That's all I can figure.

4. Lieberman called this the nuclear option by trying to pass this on
a budget bill that only requires a 51 vote which can't be filibustered.

5. That's been a big part
of the debate. Did you see Kerry speak? He had a two-track argument - one about ANWAR itself, and the other about using the budget to force through legislation they can't pass any other way.

And where do these repukes come off saying with such utter confidence that there will be no environmental impact from drilling, period.

6. No - I missed it damnit.
Did you see this -

KOS Indicates We Will WIN On ANWR - and Stevens Will Then Quit!

A diary tallying votes indicated there was a 50-50 split on the amendment until a few minutes ago, when there was a report that Salazar from CO will vote to make sure there is NO drilling in ANWR. If true, the amendment will work in our favor (and I'm a little confused on whether a YES vote on the amendment means no drilling in ANWR, although I think that's right).

KOS also reports on a story that says if Stevens doesn't get to vote his way he'll take his Hulk tie and go home - presumably to take a hand drill into his backyard and weep at all that could have been, I suppose.

Keep up the pressure -- it looks like another win coming our way!

Goodbye moose and caribou. The vote was 49-51, and 3 Dems voted with the Repugs. Landrieu from LA, and the 2 from HI. What's up with the Hawaii Senators? :grr: :puke:

10. Like I said on that thread, Kos said Franken was going to run in
2006 for the Senate so I take what he says with a grain of salt.

7. What's with the Hulk tie?
No grown man should wear a tie like that to work, especially not a Senator. I cannot take a politician seriously if he's wearing a tie with a comic book character on it. How ridiculous.
