Pics and news

Sen. John Kerry (news - web sites), D-Mass., speaks at a press conference where he pledged with fellow Democrats to fight to strike language from a budget proposal that supports energy development in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge on Capitol Hill in Washington Tuesday, March 15, 2005. SEN. KERRY IS MANAGING THE FLOOR FIGHT ON THIS IN THE SENATE ONE WEDNESDAY, MARYCH 16TH. (This should be interesting.)

Did anyone else hear that Sen. Stevens from Alaska from livid at Kerry sending out his e-mail? Considering how Sen. STevens was blaiming the failure to pass ANWR drilling legislation has led to his medical depression, I imagine that Sen. Kerry is not his favorite guy right now. (Too bad, so sad, I'm glad.)

2. Looks like Cantwell and Lieberman are Kerry's partners in this
The last time the Dems fought this, it was Wellstone, Kerry, and Lieberman leading the charge.

3. Lieberman was there also then
but i loved that high five and embrace Kerry and Wellstone gave each other after they defeated it then.

9. Yeah I know he was part of the original team
When I got my CRS training at work, there was a guy from Connecticut who worked for Lieberman there and I think he was around my age actually.

4. He was apoplectic
I swear I thought Stevens was going to pop right there on the Senate floor. First he started interrupting Durbin and yelling at him. Then, during his turn, he brought up Kerry's email and started waving it around and asking why he needed donations when we were voting tomorrow and saying it was full of lies.

24 years. We've been trying to get drilling for 24 years.

I thought he was hysterical. Like a junkie needing a fix.

5. Stevens looked like he was going to blow up any moment
Edited on Tue Mar-15-05 09:55 PM by karynnj
Yelling that Kerry's email contained lies. He then said the Wild life refuge, was NEVER a wilderness. And the land is not important to the Indians because they don't live there. I wonder if he'll speak tomorrow when Kerry's suppose to be there. That will be a contrast cool, articulate, rational Kerry vs raving, incoherent Stevens - yeah, maybe he doesn't like Kerry.

Losing ANWR last time led to clinical depression?

I love the photo.

8. Agree.
He looked and sounded like a crazy person. And since when do senators rip on each other in such a personal way? What happened to all that damned courtliness? He was plain rude.

10. Good question. I guess they have decided that the insane personal
attacks on Kerry didn't need to stop at the end of the 2004 presidential election.

shocked. I just don't remember ever hearing that kind of stuff before. Not that I'm an expert. But seriously, is Stevens totally there?

21. Doesn't get much worse than that
I've rarely seen that kind of behavior either. Teddy can really get riled up sometimes, but it's a controlled rile. Usually quite entertaining to watch. Thinking about it, he was more angry the last couple days, not dramatic like usual. This budget really does suck.

12. Well, that should make that hearing on Thursday morning fun
Commerce, Science & Transportation
Hearing on the Coast Guard Operational Readiness/Mission Balance/FY 2006 Budget Request - LIVE WEBCAST
Fisheries and Coast Guard Hearing

Republican Chair of the Committee: Ted Stevens
Sub-Commitee on Oceans, Fisheries, and the Environment Ranking Member: John Kerry

There will be a live webcast so you can see this one at http://commerce.senate.gov/
I'll be there with popcorn, diet cokes and my sense of humor.

(Seriously, is this a great country or what?) Poor Ted Stevens. I will post the article about his clinical depression over ANWR tomorrow. You can't make this stuff up people.

14. Clinical depression? Seriously??
I came into the kitchen and turned on c-span while Stevens was talking. He was so flipped-out I thought Kerry had given a speech that I'd missed.

I'm making popcorn too. (Though I may need something stronger than diet coke before it's over.)

13. Question for people who saw Stevens barking at Kerry
Edited on Tue Mar-15-05 10:47 PM by TayTay
What time was this. I want to peruse the Congressional REcord tomorrow at
http://www.senate.gov/pagelayout/legislative/g_three_sections_with_teasers/legislative_home.htm -- Congressional Record
and see this for myself. (I had to attend an event with my son tonight and missed the fireworks.) Sounds like Stevens needs something a bit stronger than prozac to get through the night tonight.

16. Thanks!
I am sorry I missed this. Kerry must have been laughing his ass off at that. (Okay, I would have been.)

And yes, Stevens says the lack of drilling at ANWR has caused him mental distress and clinical depression. But he is under a Doctor's care, so it should turn out alright. (I think he needs his meds adjusted, but hey, what are you gonna do.)

I think they should have swords before the Commerce committee meeting on Thursday. (Stevens can call on a second on account of being old and off his jump.) It really sounds like Stevens was calling Kerry out on the floor. I think my greatly and deeply esteemed Junior Senator should respond.

Well, so much for any semblence whatsoever of bipartisanship for this Senate. It's now a no-holds-barred grudge match. May the best sane Senator win.

17. Off his meds.
Yeah, something like that. He was spitting and sputtering. My daughter wandered into the kitchen while he was on, and she said, Wow, I've never seem anyone literally sputter like that when they weren't acting.

He definitely called Kerry out. I couldn't figure out why Kerry's email set him off like that. He kept talking about his asking for money, but I still don't get it.

18. He seemed annoyed that as the vote was tomorrow
Kerry would ask for money -but in the letter it said On-line advertising on the issue. So it may be something he can do quickly to get even more people involved.

But he definitely had a problem with the email. Saying it was full of lies. The lies were: the Inuit tribe doesn't live there, so apparently it's not their sacred ground. The area was NEVER a wilderness (so God created it with people and structures?). It's not a refuge.

I wonder if he'll be speaking tomorrow. If he and Kerry are together it should be a contrast. Kerry seems to just get clearer and more focused when angry as opposed to Stevens who explodes.

19. Between Stevens and Kerry
there's only one sane Senator - if today was a fair representation of Stevens. His anger was inexplicable and he was out of control. Also, he talked about Kerry "targeting" Republican Senators. (Although I can't believe that on any vote, each party looks to see who they can potentially get to their side. Kerry just told people to call their Senators.

Did they fight the last time Kerry fought for ANWR?

Well, want to make a list of people who've suffered clinical depression within, oh, the last six months, and take the steps necessary to meet their needs? ;)

I have never seen it like this. They really really want ANWR. It's gone past all reason. I hope Stevens doesn't screw around with Kerry on Oceans legislation, he's done too much good there.

23. And there, again,is a good question.
WHY do they want ANWAR so badly? Is it because they believe their own lies? Or because they now have to win EVERYTHING?

Did you see the vote on Stabenow's amendment this afternoon? It came out 50-50, they declared it dead, the dems asked for a re-vote, and ten minutes later the vote was 54-46. WTF?? The twisting of repug arms went on off-camera.

24. I missed that
I saw her start to speak, then got busy with something. Too much going on today, then tomorrow is supposed to be a judicial call-in too. So I missed that vote. I did see where they were going to try to have a quorum call just for Cantwell to introduce the ANWR amendment. They had said they would accept it, then sprung the vote on her at the least minute. She looked stunned. They backed off, but that was weird too.

You know how men are, they always have to be right and I think that's all it is. They've got their mandate and they've got to prove they were right about everything all along and can fix everything. Even though we all know that women have always been the ones that hold everything together and if men were left to their own devices they'd be living in caves surrounded by piles of chicken bones and dung. Say, maybe that could be a Lakoff frame!! If we don't stop these Republicans, that's about where they're going to have 90% of the world anyway.
