Links to You tubes from 2004 showing crowd interaction
Edited on Thu Jul-10-08 08:24 PM by karynnj
Why this post - I'm lazy and want to save links because I am sick of the ABB garbage. These are all appearances with no "celebrity around - and show enthusiasm. (Also I thought others might like them - I like the You tube "related videos" feature as it finds these.

Primaries:
Before Iowa caucus in Iowa - all candidates - Kerry shines.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1KTHmM2mzk

Kerry speaking in Iowa on vet issues - very emotional - as a wife of a disabled vet asked the aquestion and it is about the most detailed comments on what Kerry did for vets. (This was Kerry at his best - the woman's story clearly affected him and his response very genuine.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4nY8wkPTTM&feature=related

February 2004 Oakland CA - really really raucus begining (or end) of rally - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56tz2K9cTMM&feature=related

March 2004 - University of California at Sand Diego (Vanessa introduced him) Spoke of alternative energy/College for Service Program/competitiveness - get rid of tax advantages for outsourcing/ Science (huge applause)/healthcare/help for veterans/AIDS/real security/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tKsxZZ0HyU&feature=related

General election:
Minnasota - Oct 21 (small bits and pieces - very very excited huge crowd, whose "Kerry, Kerry" channts interupted constantly

Not related to 2004

Patriot Leader interview (with about the best lighting I have ever seen)
Around time of stimululous package - speaks of housing problem and fishing industry problem and mercury problem

1. Have you seen my video, Bring Me to Life?
Edited on Thu Jul-10-08 09:55 PM by Noisy Democrat
I used a lot of shots of crowd interaction that showed how people really reacted to JK. There's a better-quality version of it (better than Youtube) at http://blip.tv/file/1009768 (We posted it at MassDemsforKerry -- the link for the blog post is http://massdemsforkerry.wordpress.com/2008/06/27/bring-me-to-life/ , but the post is basically just a link to the video at bliptv).

I love it that you've collected links to more video showing how JK really interacts with people. I'd like to videotape more events, because the way he responds to people and people respond to him is just magical.

3. Love your links, karynnj!
Edited on Thu Jul-10-08 09:54 PM by Luftmensch067
We all know how much crowds adored JK, but it's good to have the irrefutable visual evidence! I love the first one. After sitting through all the rest of the primary candidates in that video, it seems clear why JK won Iowa (and THK, too!) What a lovefest! I haven't watched all the links yet, but I love that last one from the Patriot Ledger, too. I was just thinking, watching the Iran hearing yesterday, how he cuts through all the BS and gets straight to the heart of the matter. Same with this Ledger talk -- he just tells it like it is. Very refreshing!

To show he's still got it where crowds are concerned, check out KarenvH's video footage from the MA State Dem Convention last month at MassDemsforKerry: http://massdemsforkerry.wordpress.com/2008/06/13/a-beautiful-day/ You can see the same magic is happening there...

6. I just re-watched that one after watching the other one
I had fun re-watching them and you're right he does cut right to the heart of issues. That Iran hearing was interesting in that it seemed Lugar/Hagel/Bisn and Kerry and even Burns were not miles apart as 2005 and 2006 hearings seemed to be. It was interesting when Biden mentioned that Bush actually spoke to them. (Biden's story that he explained that attacking Iran could bring enemies together by using as an anology the North end and Southie and attacking Boston - and said that Kerry said all you had to do was say something about the Red Soxs. or something like that.)

I really liked the Patriot Ledger interview - including the defense of 2004.

10. Wonderful videos. They bring back good and sad memories from 2003 and 2004.
Senator Kerry shines in them all, but watching the first one, it is apparent why he won the nomination.
The others are just exceptional history. Senator Kerry was greeted by enthusiastic crowds and you can see how warmly he was treated. And the interviews show a man in charge and one who knows the issues and the problems and has solutions for them. I am tired of revisionist history. Your videos show what honestly went on. And, they show us what could have been. I am more convinced- 4 years out- that Kerry's loss was a major loss to this country also. He would have been exceptional.

Thank you for taking the time to find these and post them.

14. Because they were not exceptions to the rule, it was very easy
to find them. The first Iowa one was a "related video" to Zulch Zulu's wonderful Kerry/Kennedy one. These were all listed as related videos of that one or the other Iowa video by the same person.

The fall ones were even better - I remember sitting transfixed watching CSPAN. The problem was that the media took pains to NOT show the size and excitement of the rallies - which is why I have trouble getting people in real life to believe that he got bigger crowds than Clinton in 1992. They didn't look as big on TV.

15. God, I remember, too
Watching all those rallies on CSPAN. The ropeline footage was amazing. People NEEDED to connect with him, they called his name, they reached and stretched to shake his hand, they looked him in the eye, and this was SO not ABB. They saw him for who he was. And they loved him.

I said at the time that JK was running a 19th-century campaign -- without benefit of TV, he was still affecting huge audiences...but without benefit of TV, it just wasn't enough. And they just flat out refused to televise his campaign.

16. That is because he outshines Bush and all other competition in many of these videos.
The media's job in 2003.2004 was to make Kerry look somehow small and somehow less important than Bush. IMO, they didn't succeed. Senator Kerry is still very relevant and may become even more powerful and important in the near future. Bush, meanwhile has been exposed for the Cretan and screw up he is.

17. "Concurrent Receipts" for vets. Does anyone know if this ever passed? From Harry Reid
http://democrats.senate.gov/newsroom/record.cfm?id=268224&

It was a campaign promise Kerry made in '04 (in the vet video), but it looks like this is a Harry Reid cause in the Senate. I looked through the HEART act and didn't see it:

http://kerry.senate.gov/cfm/record.cfm?id=298335

I was just curious if it had ever come to pass.

Through two amendments to defense bills, it looks like Reid sponsored amendments will have fixed this by the end of September 2008 once the 2009 budget (Senate Res 70) passes. It is also a nice example of how things are introduced, pushed, reintroduced, broken into pieces etc to finally become law.

First, there was an amendment that passed on the 1/28/2008 bill, but it speaks of TOTAL disability, which seems to not help any with less than 100% disability. Here is the successful amendment:

S.AMDT.2925
Amends: H.R.1585 , S.AMDT.2011
Sponsor: Sen Reid, Harry (submitted 9/19/2007) (proposed 9/27/2007)

AMENDMENT PURPOSE:
To provide that veterans with service-connected disabilities rated as total by virtue of unemployability shall be covered by the termination of the phase-in of concurrent receipt of retired pay and veterans disability compensation for military retirees.

TEXT OF AMENDMENT AS SUBMITTED: CR S11765

STATUS:

9/27/2007:
Amendment SA 2925 proposed by Senator Levin for Senator Reid to Amendment SA 2011. (consideration: CR S12261-12270; text: CR S12267-12268)
9/27/2007:

Amendment SA 2925 agreed to in Senate by Unanimous Consent.

COSPONSORS(1):

Sen Lincoln, Blanche L. - 9/27/2007

Then, there was this amendment that moved the phase in allowing these concurrent payments up to the end of September 2008.

SA 4162. Mr. REID submitted an amendment intended to be proposed by him to the concurrent resolution S. Con. Res. 70, setting forth the congressional budget for the United States Government for fiscal year 2009 and including the appropriate budgetary levels for fiscal years 2008 and 2010 through 2013; which was ordered to lie on the table; as follows:

At the appropriate place, insert the following:

SEC. __. DEFICIT-NEUTRAL RESERVE FUND FOR ACCELERATION OF PHASED-IN ELIGIBILITY FOR CONCURRENT RECEIPT OF BENEFITS.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Budget may revise the allocations, aggregates, and other appropriate levels and limits in this resolution for a bill, joint resolution, amendment, motion, or conference report that provides for changing the date by which eligibility of members of the Armed Forces for concurrent receipt of retired pay and veterans' disability compensation under section 1414 of title 10, United States Code, is fully phased in from December 31, 2013, to September 30, 2008, by the amounts provided in that legislation for those purposes, provided that such legislation would not increase the deficit over either the period of the total of fiscal years 2008 through 2013 or the period of the total of fiscal years 2008 through 2018.

S.AMDT.4162
Amends: S.CON.RES.70
Sponsor: Sen Reid, Harry (submitted 3/11/2008) (proposed 3/13/2008)

AMENDMENT PURPOSE:
To establish a deficit-neutral reserve fund to provide for the acceleration of the phased-in eligibility of members of the Armed Forces for concurrent receipt of retired pay and veterans' disability compensation.

TEXT OF AMENDMENT AS SUBMITTED: CR S1885

STATUS:

3/13/2008:
Amendment SA 4162 proposed by Senator Conrad for Senator Reid. (consideration: CR S2064-2067; text: CR S2067)
3/13/2008:

20. I know he had Peter, Paul, and Mary.
:) Carole King is a friend of his and Teresa's and lives in Kethum, Idaho - and Springsteen approved Kerry using his music - after always denying it to everyone.
,
That comment was actually written because of a very obnoxious poster implying that the ONLY reason p-eople came out was to see the REAL star, Bill Clinton, in Philadelphia - and when countered that Kerry was already breaking records everywhere was that it was because of Springsteen and others. (The strange mix of going from that thread to Zuluzulch's and seeing those great Youtubes was stark.)

Now, I don't doubt that some people came to see just Clinton or Springsteen. that's why these people are used. But even in the primaries, he got large enthusiastic crowds -and in the UC-SD one the other person there was Vanessa Kerry.

22. Thanks for that info
I knew many of them supported other candidates, so I wasn't sure. I didn't pay attention 04 until I voted, and fully until after the DNC Convention. After Springsteen endorsed Obama, there was some talk of whether or not he endorsed Kerry in 04, though he let him use his music.

BTW, I saw that drivel and he got shot down. :)

26. Springsteen was fantastic in the general election
I remember in addition to singing made an incredible endorsement speaking of Kerry and the country at the Madison Wisconsin event. I remember someone saying on the Kerry blog how touched he was by the comments and how he was happy that someone was able to get him a copy of what was said.

I'm not sure if he campaigned for him in the primary - but even the use of the music before Iowa indicates big support for Kerry.

27. He had never done it before in all of his musical career.
He was found of warning his listeners against politicians from both sides and he made it a point not to get involved- that was until Kerry. Springsteen's recent CD has a song with Kerry words from the "70" echoing in it.

28. Yep
I remember him being on Nightline and spoke so well of JK. I love Springsteen's song about what JK said in '71, "The Last to Die", and JK went to one of his concerts and he dedicated and said "this is for you John".

25. Carole King came out to 'rally the troops'...
...when I was canvassing in Las Vegas in October, 2004. And the warmup act for a rally that Kerry did there (I think it was 2 or 3 days before election day) was Sheryl Crow... the crowd LOVED it ! :)

Why? Just feel like kicking this right now or just sick of people comparing him and Obama. :kick:

32. thanks.
The way I see it now, Kerry's role in presidential history seems to have been to set the stage in 2004, to begin to turn that tide (and, of course, he won, but that's another story, or maybe it's the same story). I want people to GET it, to SEE what he did; to recognize and thank him for these efforts, and for the results he obtained against very steep odds; and to acknowledge how voters (or a little more than 1/2 the voters) responded to him and his campaign.

Obama has run an outstanding campaign, and he's had more than his share of hurdles to cross. But he's had at least one advantage that Kerry didn't have: that people in 2008 are finally ready to listen to the Dem message; in 2008, they were still half-asleep (in my mind, the country has basically been in a self-induced coma since 1980), or crouching under the bedcovers in fear . The fact that vooters are listening in 2008 is in part due to Kerry's valiant efforts in 2004 and his full-throated campaigning for congressional candidates in 2006; in part due to the accumulation of Bush-caused and Bush-enhanced disasters, which are now too obvious to explain away or ignore; and at least in small part due to the apparent fact that people have finally decided to wake up and grow up, at least for now.

(On a smaller scale, I think that many Dems now see the narcissism of the Clintons, and at least some of those Dems can see how the Clintons and the 2004 Dem establishment did JK no favors in 2004. As that realization becomes more general, and the Obama-Kennedy-Kerry wing starts to dominate, I think/hope that Kerry will finally get the credit he deserves for his efforts in 2004, for his courage and his patriotism, and for all that he has done for the Party and the country)

Whenever I get nervous about this election, I remember: the people are READY this time. They WANT change. And that's why this is going to work this time. And maybe, just maybe, we can actually start to move this country forward.

33. No problem
You and others have sum this up very nicely. About Kerry, Obama, and the campaigns, then and now. :grouphug:

Everything is so bad right now that it has to be impossible that people will still vote for fear and pessimism instead of hope and optimism (thank goodness people have awaken :)). This election should not even be close. McCain in the past. Obama is the future. Nuff said. :)

Yes We Can!
