(and even if I am happy that Obama won, I applaud him for that candor

This," said Biden, "is about celebrity. You’ve never given any of us a chance. You know in your heart I’m more qualified than any of these guys up top. I know you can’t say yes or no, but I know you know.”

He charged that The Times and other newspapers rarely mentioned him in political stories, ensuring his lackluster performance and obscurity. When a reporter suggested that Biden had a chance to make his case to Iowa voters, he shot back that it was a dishonest assertion.

“Don’t be a phony, OK?” he said.

7. Yeah, but that's probably why he was dismissed
A few too many of those off the cuff statements that were just a bit too reminiscent of Dean. People want candor, not rudeness.

8. I think it's different here - it is sour grapes and disappointment and
I see this as Biden saying - now that I am out of this - I can tell you what I really thing of the way this is handled.

It"s hard to make the case. Are they covering the people who have gained support or are the people they cover the ones who get the support? There's no doubt that the media plays favorites. But, that IS one of the virtues of Iowa. It is clearly easier to win if you are both a good candidate and the media likes you, but you can win without the media liking you.
The counter to Biden's inference is Kerry 2008. The main media story was when he would drop out. Biden at least had a couple of media allies.

On the other side - the media can not sell everyone they would like to. Edwards was pushed enormously in 2004 and never came close. The media also ran many stories about Mark Warner, including a NYT magazine cover and he fizzled.

9. Yes, but it's the same personality
Sometimes it works okay, like this time with the media. Sometimes not, the 7-11 comment comes to mind. I doubt the guy has a mean bone in his body, but he doesn't seem to know different people have different standards of appropriate conversation.

11. I agree completely
Biden seems to have a missing filter between his brain and mouth. I do agree with your assessment.

12. the media responds to the people to some degree
I agree it is a combination of both.

Biden might have had a better chance in 2004--Dodd too. Because then it was about choosing an electible candidate to oust the Bush regime. Experience and toughness mattered. I think that's why Dean folded and JK won out over all the others.

This time it's about change. The people are restless with the GOP and its idiotic head and want to throw the bums out. So it becomes a question of who can bring the most refreshing alternative. Hillary is not it, because she's a re-run of the 90s for a lot of people. To the young voters, she's a character out of their childhoods, ages ago!

So Biden, Dodd, Richardson, Clinton and even Kuchinch are part of the Old Guard. I don't think Edwards is seen that way as much, given that he had such a brief stay in the Senate. And Obama is something new. Obama and Edwards are younger, and look and act youthful, which gives them an added edge.

10. Biden is right. God help us all with the lackluster and nothing but flash candidates we are left
with.
Unlike you, I am sorry Obama won. I would rather have Clinton in office at this time in our nations history than the inexperienced and photo-op ready Obama. If he wins it will be without my vote. My gut tells me he would be a disaster.
