Biden needs to hire a new joke writer.
Edited on Sun Mar-18-07 05:56 PM by Mass
Biden, among others, was at the St Patrick's breakfast in Boston today. I know that he thinks he is a bright and funny guy, but, according to what was reported by the media, I would say not so much.

When Kerry went there in early 2003, he made fun of himself, of his recently found Jewish roots, and of his prostate operation (a classy guy, then, full of self-derision.

We all know that Biden does not know a lot about self derision, so, guess who he made fun?

Yes... Kerry, and not even in an original way, but in rehashing a too well known job. Here is what the media report:

Presidential candidate Joseph Biden, the only White House hopeful from either party to attend, got in a shot at U.S. Sen. John Kerry: "John Kerry assured me, he was for this breakfast before he was against it.

(Apparently, he also made fun of McCain's age).

1. Not only a new joke writer, but a conscience
MarjorieG, MBS and I were in NYC when Senator Kerry made the point that in addition to Obama and Clinton, there were 2 other Senators running - Biden and Dodd, who he praised. He praised them again on the Imus show when they were NOT brought up as running.

Biden's mouth has already gotten him in more trouble with far less scrutiny than given Kerry - so to make a joke at Kerry's expense in Boston is the height of tackiness. Biden has NO class.

6. you wrote it so I didn't have to!
That's exactly what I thought as I read it. Another back-stabbing "friend". That gets anybody crossed off my list--even one offense like that. You are so right--NO CLASS. You simply can't advance yourself at the expense of another Democrat; aren't there enough Republicans to crack jokes about???

2. Ah, I saw that, it wasn't so bad
The real shot at Sen. Kerry came from Treasurer Tim Cahill who took no prisoners today. Ouch!

Biden was funny, relaxed, self-deprecating and very good. He joked more about his problems with 'clean and articulate' speech and his remarks on Sen. Obama than anything else. That quote above was nothing.

Sen. Kerry could have deflected the shots and given out some of his own, but he didn't show. The Governor of Mass stole the show because he had anticipated that he would be the main course on the menu. He was skewered by every speaker there for his rocky start this year. The Gov anticipated this and brought a little scorecard with him and a bell. Everytime someone took a shot at him, he would pop thos little bell and then add a number to the count. It was a funny running gag.

There were only a few Kerry jokes and only one with any teeth in it. Biden's wasn't it.

5. I am glad you say that
In spite of everything, I kind of like Biden. When he is good, he can be very good, and when he is bad... well, you know... And from what I saw of him, he does have a nice sense of humor. Principles? Probably not so much.... I remember a couple of years ago I saw a speech of his, if I remember correctly about the filibuster issue, I don't remember the venue, but it was a wonderful speech, excellent (and well organized) arguments, well delivered, humorous at times, but only in the right places, etc., very good. He has his faults, no doubt about it, but he is not just a puffed up suit as many around here (I do not mean HERE here, but DU here) consider him to be. The short (yes, SHORT) speech he gave last week at the beginning of the Iraq debate and in reply to some nonsense spewed by Cornyn I think or somebody equally nauseating, was quite something. Very passionate, to the point, refuting all the usual empty arguments, seemed completely improvised. Excellent little speech.

3. Didn't Biden have any St Patrick's Day events in Iowa or NH to attend?
Or even in his own state of Delaware? Chris Dodd was up in NH for the weekend, and showed up at a St Pat's event up there.
