Kerry’s input to be valued - Boston Herald.
Edited on Mon Feb-19-07 09:39 AM by Mass
Oh my - A positive editorial in the Boston Herald (OK, from Jeffrey Lewis, but still amazing to read in the Herald). Read with moderation! I nearly had a stroke reading the title. The Herald should be careful with their readers's health. After Howie Carr, this is a very big step. :sarcasm:

Kerry’s input to be valued
By Jeffrey R. Lewis
Monday, February 19, 2007

Two years from now, when George Bush leaves office, he will leave behind a tattered domestic policy and a severely frayed foreign policy that in some places of the world is broken, embittered, violent and organized into very different camps whose only common denominator is a raging anti-American sentiment.
On Sept. 11, the world was at our feet, understanding our anguish and offering a hand of friendship. Today, much of the world is after our throat, burning our flag, and using foreign trade and oil as weapons of economic destruction against us.
...
Hear then an inconvenient truth: At a national moment where foreign policy expertise is needed more urgently than ever before, Kerry offers this country a perspective on the world that is more sharply aligned with America’s interests than that offered by many of his Senate colleagues.
...
We simply can’t wait for January 2009 for the leadership we need. There’s an important role for Kerry to play, now. For those of us who still hold on as moderate Republicans of the past, Kerry’s is the only voice making sense, presenting a strategy and talking honestly and openly about the challenges we face and the country he loves.

Jeffrey R. Lewis is president of Heinz Family Philanthropies, and served as Republican staff director to the late Sen. John Heinz (R-Pa.).

2. That's the most perfect thing one can say about Kerry
For me John Kerry is THE foreign policy expert in the USA. That's why I always thought that if not President he should be Secretary of State.

3. Nice. And very true.
JK does make sense and he is the leader we need. If not in the White House, where better than the Senate? His role is far different than it was prior to 2004. We called him our "shadow president" after the election because of the leadership role he took on. Now more than ever we need his leadership. It's nice to hear that someone else gets that.

5. Shocking.
It's written by a friend, but the Herald did publish it.

6. Good article. Mr. Lewis makes wonderful points
Btw, Whome, did you see this in the Herald. http://news.bostonherald.com/editorial/view.bg?articleid=183289

Yes, the Herald is a snarky paper. But they do have some humor. I hope to see Barry O'Bama at that breakfast. That would be awesome!

7. O'Bama?????

No, I hadn't seen it. Thanks for the link! From what I can see so far, Obama has a good sense of humor. He'd do well there.

I love this:

Two names, on the other hand, are conspicuous for their absence.

The first: Mitt Romney. For those with short memories, he used to be the state’s governor . . . or, perhaps, the absentee landlord.

“Mitt was invited,” says Hart. “Initially he said he was coming. But then his team cancelled, a couple of weeks ago.”

Such class.

A year ago, Romney’s speech went down well. He disarmed his critics by beginning with a joke, to the effect that he was so happy “the breakfast happened to coincide with one of my visits to Massachusetts.”

Did you see Mittens-and-wife's This Week interview? It was to positively retch.

8. I would love to see Sen. O'Bama there at the breakfast
and I would love to see the reptilian Romney stay away. (Ack.) I adore the way the snarky Herald said that Sen. O'Bama could hang out with that other Irish pol Gov. Patrick. (bad Herald, bad, bad, Herald. but  )

I spared myself watching Romney yesterday. I actually slept in and missed it. How many times did he diss Massachusetts in that interview? Notice how he had to declare in Michigan? That's cuz people in Mass would just as soon pretend he was never Gov here. Ack, what a friggin poseur.

The Breakfast, truth to tell, hasn't been any good since 2003. Maybe this year, it will be better. Presidential candidates will be tripping overthemselves to get to the podium and make bad jokes about each other. That might be highly entertaining. I wonder if Hillary will sing? I also do hope that that tall fellow from Boston makes it. He could have a golden opportunity to really, really have some fun this year. (And be really roasted back. It could be a lot of fun.)

9. This past year the Herald has
appeared more balanced to me than the Globe actually. The Globe is more subtle, but I dont think anymore fair. At least when the Herald bashed the hell out of Dems the next day they would bash Healey, Bush or Romney. My impression from the tone of the Globe, article placement, and headline placement is that they have wanted to cover a Romney/Clinton race all along --- with a many writers sympathetic to Romney.

10. I agree.
The Herald has been more straightforward than the Globe. Amazing. Perhaps they saw an opening and went for it.
