Negative attention is better than no attention at all.

There is usually one or two on every board. They live for confrontation. Because they have no life or an unsatisfactory life, they seek satisfaction by making others as miserable as they themselves are. They come online and cause grief wherever possible. It's a type of troll behavior but a territorial variation thereof. Instead of trolling around looking for places where they can incite trouble, they habituate a specific board, becoming a regular poster. There is the "poor me" aspect to the behavior, as well. They annoy people specifically to elicit a response, but as soon as they do, they go into the victim mode and try to garner sympathy for themselves. It's very pathological and they are the bane of moderators everywhere.

20. It's more difficult to get rid of this type of individual than you might think.

Believe it or not, it is far better to manage this type of poster than it is to kick them off the board. If they are banned, they always find a way to get back on the board and cause even more trouble. The smartest way to handle them is to wrist slap on occasion to keep them in line. They are addicted so the threat of being shut out usually gets them to tone it down for a while.

My daughter runs a board for equestrians and there are some horrible vendettas going on there. I'm talking vendettas that have gone to restraining orders and legal measures. It gets that bad. My daughter has gotten phone calls from lawyers and police departments because people on the board have threatened each other. She's deleted their posts and banned their IP addresses and still they worm their way back in. Eventually their behavior outs them and it is back to square one.

Unfortunately, DU is probably correct to manage the behavior instead of eliminating the user.

But you're right, Karma usually triumphs in the end. What goes around...

22. It's horrible. They run down each other viciously.

They disagree on horse slaughter, training methods, how to care for your horses and just about everything you can think of. Not the majority of people, just the trouble makers. Most people are nice and helpful, but there are a few. And the few are enough.

They post bad things about each other, like so-and-so abuses her horses and you should never board there because the horses are in mud year round. Then so-and-so complains and starts a law suit and there is a counter suit. Threats and restraining orders ensue. Some claim the posters on the board have hurt their business. People are told not to mention individuals or businesses but they make veiled reference that the community can see through.

It's horrible and vindictive. People can be ugly no matter where you find them. Something about being online brings out the beast in a lot of folks.
