Question: Who would you be backing in the Presidential race in '08.
Deval: I have ties to Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Kerry. But if Sen. Kerry got into the race, I would have to back my home state Senator.

10. He is indeed.

Deval Patrick had over 40,000 workers eventually in his campaign. Most held signs or talked to neighbors and so forth. At least 5,000 were active campaign workers who made millions of phone calls, knocked on countless doors and did a lot of 'grunt' work for Deval. This was, easily, the largest grassroots mobilization of workers and voters in Massachusetts in my lifetime.

Also, there are a huge number of 'kids' who have checked into this process because of Deval Patrick and his vision of hope and optimism. It will be a real challenge to keep those 'kids' engaged in the process. I saw a lot of these young people at the Inaugural Ball on Thursday night and it was just wonderful to see.

* kids refers to people younger than, say, 25 or so. It is not a perjorative term.

He could very easily have stopped after the first sentence as he is not required to say he is for anyone yet - especially before that Senator even announces.

He is absolutely exceptional. I am so glad I had the pleasure to see his rally at Faneuil Hall.

7. How close was Edwards relationship to Kennedy?

I know Kennedy is supposed to have pushed Edwards as a VP choice, but I really don't remember any Kennedy/Edwards pictures when he was VP - when his support of Kerry would not have seperated them. I know they did the minimum wage appearance in DC last summer, but that's been Kennedy's issue for decades.

Didn't the Globe suggest last time that Kennedy would support Edwards - then Kennedy turned up in Iowa with Kerry?

8. I hear that the Edwards people

have been hammering other Dems with requests for endorsements. That's probably what started the whole thing with MA Dems pressuring Kerry to make a decision.

9. I have never heard of a close relationship. Only two points:

- Kenendy said that Edwards was impressive in his stump speeches, which is true (with the limitations we know),

- Edwards pushed Kennedy's minimal wage bill, which makes sense because it was directly linked to Edwards's main issue and he was free to go throughout the country.

And I have never heard about Kennedy pushing Edwards as VP. My understanding is that people like Terry McAuliffe and the Clinton team were pushing him, but I have never particularly heard about Kennedy.

Kennedy supported Kerry from the get-go, as did every major MA Democrats with a couple of exceptions who, for the most part, supported Dean.

This said, Kennedy's endorsement is a big endorsement, so even the rumor of such an endorsement is a big thing. Before Bayh pulled out of the race, quite a few Bayh's supporters were suggesting that Kennedy would go for their guy (because he was friend with his father). I have the feeling a lot of rumors are just that, rumors.
