<<Remembering Jackie Robinson; netting the Lobsters
By Carol Beggy & Mark Shanahan, Globe Staff | February 1, 2005

HAPPY BIRTHDAY Had he been elected president, John Kerry probably would not have been able to attend yesterday's event at Fenway Park celebrating the life of Jackie Robinson. But he wasn't, so he did. The senator was joined in the .406 Club by Robinson's granddaughter Sonya Pankey, as well as by Della Britton-Baeza, CEO of the Jackie Robinson Foundation; the Rev. John Bryson Chane, bishop of the Episcopal diocese of Washington, D.C.; Robinson biographer Scott Simon, and a few hundred children. Considering that the Red Sox were the last team to integrate -- 12 years after Robinson broke Major League Baseball's color barrier -- marking what would have been Robinson's 86th birthday was nice.>>

1. Nice. Damn, I want some perks like this.
Now I'm jealous. I want to go hang out at Fenway.

I am so glad this event was held at Fenway. The Red Sox had a deplorable record for many years on hiring minorities. It's nice to see positive proof that things can and do change.

Nice. Exhausting schedule. DC - Vienna - DC - Boston - DC. Wow.

I read the story, nice job JK.

Edit: Oh hell, that's so damn nice: Story on RedSox.com

Through the magic of video tape and the memories of such heralded speakers as Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Rep. Richard Neal (D-Mass.), the youngsters were given a primer on the life of Robinson and his impact on both baseball and society.

"Jackie Robinson once said that each life is not important in and of itself," said Kerry, last year's Democratic candidate for the presidency. "But the importance of each life is the impact it has on other lives. That's why he wasn't just a great leader for African-Americans. That's why he was truly an American hero."

Kerry, a force behind the posthumous award to Robinson of the Congressional Gold Medal -- which will be presented to Robinson's family in the Capitol Rotunda on March 2 -- was the obvious star of the day.

Boston moment: I want that one where he is holding the World Series trophy. Damn. OMG. OMG. OMG. That's a great pic. Whome.... I'm getting the vapors. I want to handle that trophy... ahm, I want, nevermind. I'm speechless. The Trophy, drool, drool drool. (What would Wally say?)

TayTay must retire for a little time now. Too too much.

John Kerry standing next to the World Series trophy. John Kerry holding the World Series trophy. (Oh, and Kerry made a very nice speech about Jackie Robinson and what he meant to baseball and to America. Very nice.)

I want that pic of Kerry holding the trophy. I just love it. If only Kerry had won last year. Then he could have had that trophy handed to him in the WH. Then I would have been singing:

Oh sweet mystery of life at last I found you.

(It's a Red Sox thing.) Damn. So close to perfect.:loveya:

Oh wht the heck: .:loveya: .:loveya: .:loveya: .:loveya:
