Catch it on C-Span 2: http://www.c-span.org/watch/

Starts at 10:45 am, break from 12:30 - 2:15, then starts up again. Should be riveting.

2. his tone is one of a man who
doesn't mean what he says. Someone who thinks he has to lie because it's the only thing he can do in his position. Gonzales and Bush both hate the use of torture? Come on, now!

4. Orrin Hatch is an idiot
Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 12:22 PM by TayTay
Honestly. How can you seriously stand there and issue only recommendations based on minority status. It's insulting. Minorities have brains and free will and consciences. That is equality. Gonzales is being held accountable for what he did, not how he was raised or his ethnic background.

What a jerk Hatch is.

9. Ahh, but you forget...
We are in the age of zero accountability.

Quick, look over there - it's HIS fault! 9/11!!! 9/11!!!

12. Two words for Hatch: Carlos Gutierrez.
Gutierrez, the former CEO of Kellogg's, was easily confirmed as Commerce secretary by the Senate. So much for anti-Latino bias.

Three more words for Orrin Hatch: Bill Lann Lee, the former NAACP lawyer whom the Republicans stubbornly refused to confirm to the Department of Justice during Clinton's second term. I guess that means, by Hatch's logic, that the Republicans are anti-civil rights AND anti-Asian American.

Hatch has actually been one of the GOP who has traditionally worked with Democrats, particularly Senator Kennedy, where there is common ground. Shame on him for pulling such a stunt. Shame, shame, shame, shame, shame.

6. Leahy and Feinstein spoke already
Pretty good arguments. They don't trust Gonzales to be independent. They have not been given information requested--either answers about memos or his personal opinions on torture. It continues...

7. Not too much
Edited on Tue Feb-01-05 12:22 PM by TayTay
Dems: Torture is wrong and I cannot vote for someone who promoted it as US policy. (Leahy, Feinstein)

Reps: Gonzales had a difficult and poor upbringing and is Hispanic. (I regret writing that, but it came up.) (Hatch, etc.)
Now it's 9/11 that justifies any and all actions, even torture. Oh, and by the way, the soldiers did it. (Blame the troops.)

By the way, is there a time limit? Hatch has already been up there FOREVER.

Is JK speaking? Do we know? I imagine Teddy is.

Edited to add: Poor and Hispanic? Sounds familiar. Rice was black and plays the piano. Real good reasons to vote them in.

What a disgusting tactic.

Anyway, my Brazilian mom says that considering the horrible history of CIA-backed human rights abuse and torture in Central and South America, any Latino who condones it should be ashamed of himself.

Dems Weigh Delaying Gonzales Appointment

By JESSE J. HOLLAND, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Senate Democrats are considering filibustering Alberto Gonzales' nomination to be attorney general over his role in developing the Bush administration's policies on treating foreign detainees.

No final decision has been made yet, but at least two Democrats — Sen. Edward Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), D-Mass., and Democratic Whip Richard Durbin of Illinois — planned to urge the Democratic caucus Tuesday to consider filibustering Gonzales' nomination, said a Senate Democratic aide, who spoke on conditions of anonymity.

There's too much going on tomorrow, and it looked as though the Senate might vote on Gonzales Thursday. At least that's what Frist was saying this afternoon.

31. hehehehehe
yeah, the Dems are denying * a chance to crow tomorrow night about getting his SecState and AG choices approved. Hehehehehe

Bet * includes references to both sides coming together and trying to find common ground. Only when Repukes talk about common ground and reaching out in a bipartisan fashion they mean Dems should completely adopt their positions. Not this time, ya bastards.
