1. Well, that was weird.

Pornographic beginning almost, a dead girl.
Chloe being super sleuth, no Lois.

Jane Seymour was great, tho.

2. I am so over Smallville
The only reason I watched it in the first place was because Clark and Lex are so damn pretty and they always looked like they were 10 seconds off jumping each other.

Last year's opener and first couple of episodes were phenomenal and then it just went downhill from there. The monkeys on typewriters masquerading as writers turned Clark--who is supposed to grow up to be Superman, who is a HERO--into the world's biggest asshat. Regardless of how you feel about Clark and Lex's relationship it should have been the cornerstone of the show...period. But the dirty old men that run the show insist on foisting upon the audience the faiwy pwintheth who can do no wrong, Lana Sue. I mean for f's sake the girl is a FOOTNOTE in the Superman mythos, I didn't even know she existed before this show and I read the damn comics growing up. Hell the Luthors were the only reason I managed to stay in as long as I did last season.

This season, same damn thing happened...the opener was fantastic and now we're back to Lanaville and lame ass FOTW storylines and juvenile ratings stunts. Except one thing has changed this year, a little four little word called LOST on another channel. Smallville will get downloaded when I feel like it, I found a kick ass show on another network that DOESN'T insult my intelligence.

You know something is seriously wrong with a show when you find yourself reading more fanfic than watching the show because the fanfics are 800 times better than the actual scripts.

3. Bravo, bravo, bravo.

Exactly.

The way he's using is powers is interesting because they're
changing so fact, but having Pete gone (wtf?) and now Chloe
has to compete with LOIS for Clark's affection now too?

It's jumping the shark like Charmed did with all the fairly
tales and stunts and warmed over children's stuff.

But still, Tom Wellington's pretty, and I think it's great the
way that Glover is proving that gorgeous hair wasn't a wig.

5. Over on TWoP we have a cute nickname for Lionel
We call him the Magnificent Bastard...'cuz it's so true, LOL. If they made a spinoff called The Luthors I would completely watch it.

Lois started off as a really interesting character, one of the few women on this show with some gumption (well before they took Chloe's spine away and made her a simpering twit). But now we're back to more Clark's Creek love triangle horseshit. I'm not so sad about Sam Jones III leaving the show because Pete was so underused it was almost criminal. On TWoP we called him Product Pimpin Pete because it seemed like the only time we ever got to see him was when he was doing some cheesy product placement. Hell in the episode when we found out he was leaving he had more lines than in the entire previous season-and-a-half.

The sad thing is, when this show is good it is REALLY good...like Chris' Reeves' guest spot in Rosetta. The mythology episodes are SO good. That's why I get so mad at these people, I mean it's not like One Tree Hill or something where I know the show and the writers completely suck ass and there is no hope for anything good. I know they can do better, but they don't, and it's just frustrating.

I think they should do what Trek did back in the day and solicit fan-written scripts. Xena also did this in the last season of the show (a well-known fanfic author penned a few episodes) and there was a marked improvement in the quality of the show.

6. Didn't they do something similar with The Sentinel?
Jim and Blair got pretty close during the run of the show and TPTB stepped in so their characters wouldn't put out the homoerotic overtones like they were. This is what I've heard on other slash lists.

Did TPTB have the same fears with Clark and Lex which would explain the changes in the storyline?

7. I missed out on The Sentinel
I skipped out on it the first time 'cause I thought it was just another shitty UPN action show. Then I discovered that it was like the slashiest TV show since Highlander and I started kicking myself. I've only just gotten involved in the fandom, so I'm not sure what the story is with TPTB.

I wouldn't put it past the Smallville TPTB though to put a damper on the Clex. Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum have said in several interviews that they intentionally played up the gayness in their acting and stuff, and I have the feeling TPTB was not thrilled about it at all. I get the impression that they are scared to death of alienating the teen male demographic.

I think it's more the fact that Al/Miles are dirty old men who have a sick fascination with Kristen Kreuk. The way they talk about her is really damn creepy.

8. I still watch the show weekly
I am facinated by the parallels between Clark and his power and what gay teens go through. The episode, just repeated, where Chole finds out Clark's secret and he loses his girlfriend, was terrific. The lament about not going to the sherrif for fear of what others would think is something nearly all of us regret from one time or another.

9. Did you ever see the pilot episode?
Whitney and his jock friends put Lana's kryptonite necklace around Clark's neck (I forget the exact reason why, it's been a couple of years since I last watched it), and then beat the crap out of him and left him hanging from a fence in a field. It was eerily similar to Matthew Shepard's murder, and I remember a lot of early press surrounding the show touching on this scene and discussing the parallels between the premise of the show--Clark Kent's coming of age story, and the "secret" he has to hide--and what GLBT youth go through. In my experience GLBT youth tend to gravitate very strongly toward superhero comics, at least myself and the ones I know, for this very reason (the tongue-in-cheek coming out scene in X-Men 2 is another example).

At any rate, it was just a very striking scene to me, and it turned poignant when Lex found Clark and helped him down (similar to how Clark saved Lex's life when he crashed off the bridge). It got me thinking about so many different things, and it cemented my love of the show. That's why I get so upset with it--there's so many themes and ideas to be explored here, it could be so damn good (and manages it at times), but it's like the WB/AlMiles is stubbornly insistent on turning it into yet another dumbass teen angstorama. Because the WB is sorely lacking those, ya know? :eyes:

Oh well, there's always fanfic.
