Kirk casting rumors (warning - very unofficial)

The IESB has been told that 28-year-old Pennsylvania native Mike Vogel (Poseidon, Texas Chainsaw Massacre) is the front runner to play James T. Kirk in the 11th Star Trek film.

I've never heard of or seen this guy. Any opinions as to suitability?

1. No one will be suitable, period.
Oh, I'm sure that there are actors up to the challenge, and many who could look and sound enough like Shatner. However, Kirk impressions have been a staple of stand-up comics for decades, and anyone who attempts the role may elicit only laughter from me, I think. I am afraid that a serious movie will be impossible under those circumstances.

Imagine the slightly embarrassing Alec Guiness impression that Ewan MacGregor was forced to do for three movies. Multiply that by several hundred thousand, and you have unintentional parody.

I would like to see a good Trek movie, but I think Hollywood is setting itself up for failure--ludicrous failure--by not daring to go anywhere they haven't been before.

3. I think you've exactly expressed my opinion as well
After watching all those comics use the Shatner Delivery as way to get laughs it will be hard to get past that when a new actor tries to recreate the character in a serious way. And I've little faith that hollywood can recapture Trek at this point in a way to do it justice for someone like me at least, who started out as a fan of the original (reruns but well before TNG)

2. It looks good to me.
The arc in the very early Star Trek was that Kirk and McCoy had a relationship but were somewhat suspicious of the Vulcan Spock. Spock had been friends with Pike, not Kirk. The rest of the crew was somewhat dubious about having a Vulcan in their midst as well. I'm wondering if that will be the focus of the movie.

5. Karl Urban cast as the main villain
He's going to be playing a time-traveling Romulan sent back in time to kill the young Kirk.

(yes, that's the plot of the Terminator movies...)

6. Here's a pic...

We gotta see how good he looks in a ripped uniform tunic before he gets the part, though... :-)
