I'm dreading this - "The Day the Earth Stood Still" remake
http://www.scifi.com/sfw/news/sfw_news_20070416.html - You have to scroll about 3/4th the way down for the blurb.

Scott Derrickson is supposed to be the director. I'm not familiar with him at all.

This movie is one of my all time favorites. I'm not militantly against remakes but the track record is not great and some things should just be let stand. Perhaps they could reuse the theme, that is sometimes a good idea - look at all the reuse of Shakespearian themes but let's not sully the image of this SF classic please!

1. I don't know

Handled well it could turn out very good. The story would definitely need to be updated. I just don't see how it would work as is, although it might be cool to remake it in the same Cold War era as the original.

BTW: This is one of my fav flicks too and one of the best retellings of the Christian mythology that I've seen. Sadly I've never read Harry Bates' Farewell To The Master it was based on. Wonder if that's online somewhere?

Sorry, just can't resist... :)

Michael Rennie was ill

But he told us where we stand

On edit: Ooo... It is.

2. Thanks for finding that!
That was a pleasure to read.

As to the remake...yes of course if it's done well I'll enjoy it...I'm just not optimistic and some films I'd rather they didn't take the chance. But we'll see, if they get the right creative team together it could indeed be very good.

3. No problem
I was seriously happy to find it since it's been on my list for years. I only got a chance to read about half last night but so far it's a better crafted story than the original movie adaptation.
