Is Stargate SG1 Worth Getting Into?
I enjoyed the SG movie and have recently taken a keen interest in SG:Atlantis. With all SG1 episodes available on DVD and the new season starting soon, is it worth a cram-session to get into this show?

1. I enjoy it
It's not super-incredible-great TV, but it's decent and I LOVE Ben Browder (sp?) so I'm pretty pleased that he's joined the cast. I really loved Harry Dean Anderson though.

Even though it's not necessary, If possible, viewing the seasons in order would help because there are some general story lines that tend to link episodes together.

:hi:

4. Yeah, I'll Definitely Watch the Seasons In Order...

I'll DVR the new season so I don't have to get the other, I think it's eight, seasons in the span of a couple of weeks. Sorry to say but I think I may not have gotten into the show earlier because of Anderson.:hide: That whole MacGyver thing was over the damn top. I'm willing to let bygones be bygones though.

7. Yup, From The Few Episodes...
I've seen, I like his character. He has a dark confidence about him.

2. Yeah go for it
If you liked the movie and atlantis then you should start from the beginning and watch em all starting with season 1.

There is definately an over-arching story that develops and is worth watching through in the correct order.

In the first few seasons, it's almost as if the show wasn't taking itself seriously. And then it grew, and grew, and GREW.

The early shows are worth watching for just that reason... you can SEE the seriousness of the overarching plot developing over time.

The past couple seasons- especially the one that ended last year- have been really good. They're taking themselves very seriously now; the Ori are an implacable and seemingly unstoppable enemy dedicated to- wait for it- forcibly converting nonbelievers to the Book of Origin, which the Ori claim is the one true path to Enlightenment (read: Ascension).

If you don't know what Ascension is, turn to the Wiki on the Stargate mythos. This concept also appears in SG: Atlantis.

Those two shows are two of my three favorites, with the other, of course, being Battlestar Galactica.

Incredible stuff, all three.

9. The Fist Seasons Were On...
Showtime weren't they? How do the production values between Showtime and now?

10. I was pleasantly surprised by both Showtime's rendition and at first,
less surprised by the SciFi rendition, but they have kept the story fresh and I still enjoy just about every new episode. I like it!

11. Zombie Thread, Rise From Your Grave.
It's only been four years since I started this thread; but now that SG-1 is available via Netflix streaming, I've finally started to watch. What a pleasant surprise. I'm nearly done with the second season and overall it holds up well for being 13-year old TV sci-fi. Some of the FX are cringe worthy but the writing is pretty strong. I especially enjoy the sci part of the Stargate sci-fi universe. Some of the post-Cold War political sensibilities from the time are interesting as well. The season 2 episode "Serpents Song" is a great example. I'd love to sit a bunch of Neo-Con sycophants down to watch that episode and recall what America was about not too long ago. I'm glad I belatedly took the plunge.

12. Been a while since I saw an Altered Beast reference
Still, I didn't really care for the Stargate universe. Saw the film in the theater and tried several times to get into the series, but it just didn't work for me.

13. Nice Catch.
I had to use the Google brain to make sure it was "grave" and not "tomb" though. It's been a long time since the Jenny's been hooked up. Different strokes for different folks on the SG thing.

14. Yeah, it's a matter of taste, but I'll say this:
It's far from the worst sci-fi show I've ever seen!

15. What show would you reserve that distintion for?
I can't think of any real stinkers at the moment but I'm sure I've forgotten a few here or there. Well, maybe the final two seasons of Heroes.

16. Space Rangers was pretty bad, and on network TV no less!
Also, the Robocop series was quite a steaming pile in its own right.

20. Wow! that does look bad.

Fun Fact: Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa was in one of the better SG-1 season 1 episodes. ..."Emancipation"
